In XP, how to reactivate the card reader?

Hi Guys,

My Dazzle 6 in 1 card reader is connected to a Win XP computer through a USB cable. When I plug in a CF card, a window opens and asks me which action to choose. I choose capture with Nikon View 5. When the transfer is over, I click on the disconnect the hardware (or whatever XP is saying), and when this is done, I take out the card. Everything is OK. If I want to put another card (and the computer is still running), I can't access the reader (because it is hardware disconnected).

I am afraid to pull out the card while "under power" - I read in somewhere I should "disconnect" the reader before removing the card.

What do you, experts, recommend? If I disconnect, how do I re-connect?

Thanks in advance,

Luby

It, and your card, are designed to allow you to push and pull the card while it is "on."
While it is safe to disconnect the reader - it's not necessary.

Actually you should have a small icon in the bottom left hand corner of the info bar at the bottom of the screen, if you can't see it then click on the two arrows facing left, when you click on this icon (small pcmcia icon wiyh green arrow above) it will give you a choice of safely removing hardware (if you have more than one device of this kind) click on the one you wish to stop and a text box eill appear telling you it is save to remove hardware, removing the media from your reader powered up can damage your media.

Hi,

Thanks Guys,
removing the media from your reader powered up can damage your media.

That's what I thought/read too. The Question still is: once disconnected, how do I plug and use another card (after the reader is "out"), without restarting the computer?

I leave my Dazzle reader hooked up all the time. I never disonnect it. It and XP are meant to work with the CF card being put in and pulled out while still connected. No harm will be done.

I speak from many months of experience with the 6in1 and many years of experience with a Sandisc card reader (in XP and Win 98 SE and Win2K).

If you take your Dazzle reader out and plug it in, don't disconnect it. The USB port will recognize if it is in or not. When plugging it in to the USB or removing it from the USB I would suggest not having a CF card or any card in the Dazzle reader.

Don't be afraid of the reader hurting anything while it is plugged into XP or for that matter any operating system that I am aware of.

While I agree with most of what you have said, clicking on the PCMIA ICON with the green arrow located on the lower right side of the tray will tell you when it is safe to remove the CF card. This is true for either a firewire or USB readers. If it is not finished I would not pull out the CF card. You could lose files or the CF card may not have deleted all the files if that was your intended action.

Trent

I always leave my reader connected. To remove a card I go to "My Computer" right click on the card drive icon and click on "eject" I then pull out the card. I have never had a problem with any card. One warning, don't format your card with XP. If you do you get the "CHA" and have to reformat the card in camera.

That is a safety feature I agree with. I normally just watch the Dazzle or other reader and its "ready" light.

Thanks Guys,

I knew most of what you said. I don't physically disconnect the reader from the computer, it stays plugged in all the time - I disconnect it "hardware" wise from the icon on the bottom bar, but then I can't get it to read another card.

I like most the "Eject" idea - I have tried it with my Firewire drive, but didn't think of it for the card reader.

Thank you all once more,

Luby.

Hi Troy,

I am sorry to continue this, but I can't use the "Eject" command - it gives me an error. Since nobody told me how to reconnect the USB reader, without replugging the cable, I have to ask you to clarify your method. Are you saying that if all the activities with the CF card are over - no green light, transfer, etc. - then you can pull out the card, WITHOUT clicking on the icon "to disconnect the hardware", or selecting "Eject", or doing anything else? And then a minute later push in another card? So, basically you put the card, transfer your images and then pull it out, without clicking or unpluging anything, right?

Thank you again,

Luby.
