I'm using CS5 and occassionally the program will freeze and lock to a "hand scroll" icon (the one with the clenched fist for scrolling image). I till can save it but got to restart the com. Its getting quite frustrating. I'm just working n a 5mb files.

Has anyone get similar experience and is there a short cut to overcome without restart?

I can't really say what is causing your problem, but I have something similar occuring and I know how to solve my problem - maybe yours is the same. I sometimes get a stuck hand icon on my Photoshop screen, it turns out that it's something with my keyboard, the spacebar (and just recently the Alt Key on the left side) appear to be sticking. If I hit (pretty hard) the space key (and now the Alt Key too) the icon changes back to what it should be.

If you figure out which keyboard shortcut is causing you particular icon to show up, maybe that key is sticking on your keyboard too? Or maybe just hitting it a few times will force it to wake up?

Also, if you want to restart Photoshop without restarting the computer, try (for a PC) typing Control-Alt-Delete and selecting Start Task Manager from the menu (you can get here several other ways too). In the Task Manager, make sure you are on the Applications tab and right click on Photoshop then select End Task. It will terminate Photoshop without asking you to save your work so be careful to save first. It may save you from a complete restart, but it's not really a solution if there's an underlying problem.

If I am on the right track, CS is not really 'freezing up' if you are still able to save your work. If it was, you would get the notification that it has done so and is shutting down. You would not be able to save anything. This as well as I was unable to load the most recent update caused me to un-install and reinstall the program. No other fixes suggested by Adobe and members here worked. The reinstall has cleared everything at this end.

Are you able to move the fist? Does hitting the Esc key do anything? Have you updated your mouse/keyboard and video card drivers as well as the latest CS patch to 12.0.3? If so, and your problem persists, maybe Adobe support can help?

Or, have a look here .. assuming you have Windows ..

To see if you settings for CS are within range ..

Good luck.

If at first you don't succeed, skydiving is not for you.

Are you using a Wacom tablet? Some of their latest drivers are known to cause hang-ups in Photoshop and Lightroom...

Try uninstalling the driver and installing an older version. The Wacom forum had a few topics about this issue:

http://forum.wacom.eu/

I'm using 6.12-5 for my Intuos 3 with Win7 64 bit and CS5 64 bit, so far no problems anymore. Newer drivers kept giving issues with Adobe products (especially Lightroom3 64 bit, according to forum also a lot of CS5 issues)

I've had a problem with Topaz filters not accepting Wacom pen input for quite some time now. I keep updating to the latest Wacom drivers hoping for a fix. After reading your post I though 'why not downgrade?'

Well, it did the trick, my Topaz filters now work properly with my Wacom tablet/pen! This was very helpful, and I'm kicking myself for not thinking of it myself a long time ago!

I posted about this here and even Topaz support suggested I update the tablet and they even offered updated versions of their plugins.

Thanks Bizzarrini for the suggestion - I don't know if it will help other people, but it worked for me!

Glad that worked for you! Credit where credits are due though, the numerous wacom vs adobe threads on this forum and the wacom user forum were a big help! Apparently wacom isn't able to reproduce the problems a lot of people are having with the combination of tablet and adobe products (mostly 64 bit versions), so for now there are no real remedies except going back to an old driver.

Emjoy!

I have tried your suggestion and installed driver 6.1.2-5. I found that I have now lost my control over the wheel on my Intuos 4.

Has anyone found a better solution?

Later today I received the following from Wacom:

Hi Michael,

I would highly recommend using the very latest tablet driver from our website, at http://www.wacom.com/downloads

Here are the proper steps to successfully install our tablet driver:

Windows 7/Vista Pro Driver:

Disconnect the tablet from the computer
Open your Start Menu and then the Control Panel
Open Programs and Features

Uninstall any listing here for Tablet or Wacom Tablet and then restart the computer
After restarting, download and install only the latest 6.16 driver from:
http://www.wacom.com/Downloads/driver-detail.php?id=221
Once the installation is complete, and the system is stable, connect the tablet

Let me know how these instructions work out for you.

Yes I had the problem. It happened when using Tiffs created originally in Photomatix. I've changed the preferences in Lightroom export and in CS5 to PSD and not had a problem since. I found that it wasn't a complete freeze but exceptionally slow.

Things that should be intantaneous took over 1 hour. I had to force a save to PSD with the affected file. Then delete the tiff in bridge. If I left it, when I just navigated to the folder the machine froze.

I just finished an hour long session after installing the latest driver (as per the instructions I have above). So far, so problems. This may be the solution.
