s10 recharger

it's a marketing scam... you need to pay $100 more for the recharging kit... since there are no aftermarket rechargable batteries that can fit the A-series and this new s10....
it's a good camera... but not as cheap as you want to believe....
Does the s10 come with a recharger?

no offence but you have answered your own question... the customer has to stay loyal to your line of digicams in order to use the battery.... it's like getting a laptop with no charging unit and no aftermarket batteries are able to use it..

you have to understand that if i was to buy the s10, i would have to factor in the price of the charging unit, which EVERYONE will have to do... noone can live on 2cr5 batteries when it gets milked dry in matter of minutes... so even if you said no customer should forced to purchase another kit.. if i sold my a50(non-existant) the other person would get the camera for what it seems like a good price and then find out it doesnt come with batteries !@$#@@!! and has to go out and buy the kit... it hurts someone else in the due process..

but i know you're protecting the image of your company, and i am glad that there are someone from canon reading this forum answering other questions that might shed some light on the tough questions.. good luck!
It's not a 'marketing scam' at all. Why should a customer who may own the
DK100 or DK100 from a previous PowerShot model be forced to purchase
another one along with the S10?

For those of you living the States, you may go check a Canadian site called Henry's. (www.henrys.com) They have Canon S10 in stock for US674. The Canadian model includes DK100 power kit as a standard feature. The deal seems unbeatable. The company also has regular retail stores throughout Toronto area. Thier return policies are just fabulous. You can exchange and return as many cameras as you can within two weeks of first purchases. no questions asked!

Not sure I agree with that logic in that as another person pointed out here, if the customer DID have a previous Powershot model and upgraded it, chances are they would sell the charger as a package deal with the camera to someone else and thus need the new charger.

Perhaps my biggest beef is the DK100 price -- $100? Bet there's a heck of a markup on that baby! I'd say it's a way to make the sales price of the S10 a few bit lower and allow marketers to come back with a "bundle" that adds the charger and make it look like a "deal."

Digicams present a problem for manufacturers in that unlike something like printers or film cameras, there are no "consumables." HP doesn't make much on printers, but rakes it in on ink and toner cartridges. Kodak has gotta hate the digital revolution because they'll sell less film. So I'll bet many digicam manufacturers look to accessories as the money makers. If you included everything initially, what else would we have to spend money on?

Here's an idea though... lenses. The big thing most digicams lack is accessory lenses. Design your cameras so we can later add (and thus spend more money) on these kinds of "upgrades" and we'll both be winners. A charger should be a necessity, not an upgrade.

from what chuck has told me the charger is very 'smart' having both -delta V and delta T charge termination. such a smart charger would not be cheap.

Everybody in this forum agree that all new digicam Need R.bat.

The reason given from Chuck sound OK. The R.bat kit of about $100 seem too expensive for a R.bat of this capacity, considering that I had bought a set of GP AA x4 R.batt kit for $20.

I agree that the GP "default" charger (there higher grade aviarable) may be of lower quality than Canon's as it took 13hours to recharge. But it is user friendly as the charger will keep the bat fully charge without over charging it. Maybe it is that expansive to build the Canon R.bat kit(people with knowledge of other similar quality and type of R.Bat kit will be able to judge whether $100 is fair).

It would be better for 99% of the S10 buyer if Canon is to sell the S10 with R.bat at $700, while giving an option to opt out the R.bat for $100. Seem like the same thing, but feel a whole lot better for everyone. (Do anyone know of such a practise in the market ?).

Anyway, selling digican nowadays without R.bat is like asking IBM to sell their notebook computer without battery as people would be upgrading them quite constantly.

I can excuse Nikon 950 sold without R.Bat as there are many diff Companies making AA R.bat in the market which are fairly price.

I might be wrong with my judgement and this message is solely for discussion purposes.
Thanks

Does the s10 come with a recharger?

Hi, Rick:

Individual situations will differ, but that's my point. There's always a possibility that a PowerShot A-series owner who already has a DK100 or DK110 will add the S10 to the camera(s) they already have rather than replacing one with the other. There's also the likelihood of business organizations purchasing a group of PowerShot cameras and reducing the number of Power Supply Kits they buy in order to save some money. Separating the DK110 from the camera gives the buyer a choice; bundling the accessories in the standard kit does not.

With or without the DK110, The PowerShot S10 is still competitively priced to other cameras with similar specs.

Thanks for the other suggestion on add-on accessories.

Argh.. sorry for the empty post.

Computers4sure.com has the DK110 kit for USD $83. Combined price with S10 would be around $690... comparable to Henrys.com, but with lower shipping cost for those of you in the US.

Still waiting for mine.
