I just saw this on one of the other boards.

As of 3pm EST (noon Pacific time) the Viking 512mb card from amazon will be $199 for 24 hours... Normally over $314.

http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B00005MIS8/ref=nosim/qx5-20

You can also get another $5 off using the code: CHNKBKAMZNLT at checkout bring the price to $194 w/ free shipping.

The details are below from the rep but this is cleary a stunning deal for cards this big.

Good luck!

According to the Viking rep:

"I am sticking my neck out on the line in order to make this happen and I
have pushed the pricing early in order to prove to Viking internally that

this $199.99 price point will greatly increase demand for the 512MB Compact Flash card so much so, that it is worth bringing in thousands and thousands of these cards (equiv. to over a year's run rate of sales on the product currently). If I can convince Viking that this will increase our quantities on this SKU, Viking will make the massive purchase and we will be able to maintain the price point of $199.99 on going. Otherwise, the pricing will go back to $300++ after tomorrow.

I NEED EACH OF YOU TO PLEASE SHARE THIS INFORMATION WITH EVERYONE SO WE CANGET THE 512MB COMPACT FLASH CARD TO A PRICE THAT IS AT PRICE PARITY WITH THE 256MB COMPACT FLASH CARD PERMANTLY."

Um, true. but wouldn't you rather not carry around 4 cards?

Regardless, they've been over $310 for a long time.

If you're looking for a 512mb, this is a good deal.

I agree. It would be great to be able to take more than 40 some images in RAW mode. With a 256K card you can get a few more than 20, but 40+ would be better.

I just checked pricwatch.com and you can get them there for as little as 178.00.
Sounds like vikings overpriced to start with.

I was just thinking along the lines of "All your eggs in one basket" theme

these things will eventually go bad, get damaged, lost, whatever...

plus you can swap cards to control subject matter

All I know is that my Mr. Flash 128 doesn't work reliably

just got my 7i yesterday, I had the 128 already (works in my Canon S110)

the first picture I took was 124megs

I formatted the card several times, but some of the pictures would always be corrupted .jpegs (and would lock up my Mac)

hope my 256 arrives soon

Roy,

It sounds like you have a case of "low quality card blues" I've had a Lexar 64mb and a Simple Technology 128mb for nearly three years, used it in 5 different digicams, sometimes swapping between cams without formatting or erasing anything, and never had any problem at all.

I hope you have better luck with the 256 you have coming.

Kind regards,

Freddy

Never heard of the brands listed there for the prices you stated nor have I
ever heard of the retailers that are offering them at those prices.

Here are some flash cards in a closer category to Viking than the ones
listed on the site you mentioned

Viking $199.99

SanDisk $248
Delkin $255
Simple $294 (not available) or $337 (in stock)
Kingston $346
Lexar $394

Viking. $199. Free shipping.

http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B00005MIS8/ref=nosim/qx5-20

You be the judge.

Good luck!

In one Advertisement I saw for the Mr. Flash Cards- it actually stated "will not work in Minolta D5 or D7". I had always steered away from them for both my S404 and D7i because of that one ad. Newer ads for the Mr. Flash do not have that statement...
All I know is that my Mr. Flash 128 doesn't work reliably

.....especially when you consider that mydigitaldiscount.com has Ritek and Transcend 512 Mb cards for very close to $200 (free shipping) as their regular price.

Still, it's good to see other vendors getting their prices in line.

Did I mention the pair of 1 Gb microdrives I bought for $230 each a few months back.......

From what I read, I think Viking's trying to get this to their regular price as well - and of course it's free shipping too.

Also we're talking a 15-25$ difference with the coupon mentioned above.

While I know MyDigDisc has been good for a lot of people, this is clearly one of the best deals out there for a name brand card.

a quick glance at last few posts shows that all you post on are viking card stuff. how to buy them for good prices and how you like them.

i'm not saying that viking makes bad cards. i have their 256 mb card ($53! from amazon) and like it.

i'm just wondering why you push their stuff so hard...

David,

I obviously work for Viking but Schwa does not (that I am aware of). He/she is simply my dream come true!!! There are a handful of maniacs out there that continually push our products.

He/she may well have alterior motives but they aren't link to Viking. I am sure Schwa will be around sooner or later to respond. He/she is more active than I am on the internet.

Viking is straight up when we post messages (I like to keep it clean because I hate secret posters that mislead the world for their own demise.)

P.S. Feel free to become a Viking maniac poster as well. :)

I know we are talking about 512mb cards, but yesterday I bought two Transcend 256 MB cards from http://www.memoryx.net/ for $192.25 including shipping. According to Phil's tests at http://www.dpreview.com/articles/mediacompare/ , the Transcend 256 card is faster than the Viking 512 card, if that means anything. Not sure if it would be the same for all devices, but just another item to consider. Also, don't know if this would effect operations if wanting to rapidly take numerous photos. However, one would still have to worry with changing the cards halfway through the process as compared with the 512 card. Just another option.

LOL no but VikingGuy should give me a commission. I read a lot of deal sites (dealnews, dealmac, etc.) and have noticed a lot of deals esp. for viking stuff. There's a great deal (also from Amazon) on Mac OS X 10.2 but I doubt most of the minolta people would like that (check the mac section on there).

Sorry if I've been over zealous... work's been boring. :-)

Hey- thanks. Someone like you posted a coupon a few months ago that saved me $100 within about 30 minutes....

It does sound like a good price-but it seems that Viking perhaps should have this as their everyday price no matter what happens with this test price.

The replies here, if indicative of the consumer, are showing why the cards are not selling...
Fear of damage to a single card
Everyday prices on competitors
Speed of the card
Why wait 1-2 weeks?
The fast acquisition of pricing via the web to the consumer
If you buy a gallon of coke it is less per ounce than 4 quart bottles-so why
is it cheaper to buy several smaller cards that add up to similar sizes?

Soon the portable storage devices will catch on once people start to realize the long term savings...

Viking isn't well branded in the meory arena like it might be in the modem arena.

Put coupons for memory in with your modems--cross promote...

Guess who is in marketing when she is not taking pictures...?

David,

Are you sure you didn't mean 128mb for $53.00? The absolute best price I've seen anywhere for 256mb cards is $89.00. At $53, I'll take 4 of them.

Happy shooting,

Hello Viking Guy:

I'm a Detroit Lions fan, and without getting personal - right up front - I want you to know I don't like Vikings. I live in Phoenix, AZ and for some oddball reason, every friend I have at work seems to be a Vikings fan (ugh!).

Regardless, I will suck in my pride and buy "Viking" if the price is right. However, the speed performance must also be right.

For the Viking part number that is on sale tomorrow, what is the speed rating (read/write) compared to ... okay, let us say a Lexar 12X or 24X? Forget the price for a minute - what is the performance level of the specific part number that is for sale. OBTW - what exactly is the Viking part number of the item on sale?

Thank you in advance for your reply.

Sincerely,

Joe Kurkjian
