Just bought a Fuji Finepix 601 to replace my (stolen) Kodak DX digital camera. The 601 is a major improvement in every way but one. Windows XP does not recognise the 601 as an "Imaging Device", it instead treats it as a "Removable Disk". There are advantages to it being recognised as an Imaging Device, particularly regarding ease of transfering the pictures.

I have tried to install it as an imaging device from the control panel but I do not have the necessary driver. Does anyone know where I can get this driver (Note that it is not the USB driver available on the Fuji website).

Also, it seems that XP has a system caled WIA (Windows Image Acquisition) and the 601 is not listed as a compatable device. Does anyone know if and when Fuji will do the necessary to make it compatible.

By the way, I prefer not to use the Fuji software that came with the camera.

Thanks

You don't have much choice - either use the software or get a seperate media reader. I got a LaCie Hexia media drive and I like it. It shows up as 4 drives in XP. One for each type of media. You can just cut, copy or even paste to it.
Hope this helps.

Most card readers also mount as a removable disk in WinXP, but when you insert the card, WinXP wizard will appear and you can choose pictures as the file type and you get the Photo transfer wizard. I would recommend a card reader personnally. I really like the ZIO readers that work great with XP and do not require any extra drivers.

I use the cradle and winXp sees my 601 as an imaging device no problem. I justed installed the standard sw that came with the camera. I do have a problem that when I only have video files on the camera, it is viewed as a harddrive. Strange. As long as I have at least one photo (jpg) file, then my computer behaves normally.

Good luck.

Interesting, so can you see the 601 in the "Scanners and Cameras" window under the XP control panel?

When I turn on the cradle, xp offers to copy pictures from "scanners and camers". So, I guess, yes.

The Finepix cameras do not support WIA (see Fuji statement below) so I guess the only way to automate the transfer of photos etc. is to use the FinePix viewer and Exif launcher (simply treating the camera/smartmedia card as an external drive and using drag and drop to copy files is too inconvenient for me)

I must admit I have warmed to the Fuji software after using it for a day or two but there are several enhancements needed, particularly the integration of the Exif launcher with the XP autoplay system (e.g. you cannot seem to configure the XP autoplay system to launch the Finepix viewer if the camera contains any non photo files - e.g. movies or audio recordings) - unless anyone has any suggestions ...

oh well, a small price to pay for such a fantastic camera.

From the Fuji "Q&A" website:

"

FUJIFILM digital cameras do not support WIA (Windows Image Acquisition). Image files cannot be downloaded from "Scanners and Cameras" in the Control Panel on a PC. Refer to the Software Quick Start Guide and install the driver from the CD-ROM bundled with the product using the driver installation procedure. Then use the installed driver to download image files.
