UK: Some good m4/3 Deals about

Looking at camerapricebuster I see you can get the EP1 plus kit lens for £249, the EPL1 for £364 and there is also a £30 cashback offer on top of that too. Also the GF1 and 14-45 lens for £374.

Unfortunately, the GF1 and 20mm is still as expensive as ever.
Having already purchased the 20mm f1.7 for my G1, I decided to buy the GF1 body only for £329 (about 525 USD) plus a small amount for recorded delivery. It seems that in the current recession Panasonic are keen to reduce their inventory, especially as the GF2 cannot be that far away.

The 20mm pancake lens is such a star performer that they do not need to reduce its price. I hope to give the GF1 plus 20mm an initial outing on my cycle ride this Thursday instead of my usual LX3.

I am a raw shooter and have a G1, GF1 and GH1. My GH1, even though in the newer manufacturing range (June 2010) and with the latest firmware, suffers from banding in the shadows, even at ISO 400, and I prefer the grain like noise from the G1 and GF1. I asked Panasonic if my GH1 was defective (sent them images) and they said "no". I won't be getting another one, and think the hype around it being far better than the G1 or GF1 for stills is over-played.
That's really strange - maybe the newer GH1s are actually worse (I think mine is around July 2009). I've just pulled up a few images from both cameras at ISO 400, 800 and 1600 in Lightroom, with my default settings of mild sharpening and a touch of chroma noise reduction (no luminance). Unfortunately, I don't have the same images for both, but I've tried to reproduce one or two of the old G1 images on the GH1.

Yes, now that I look for it, there's a touch of banding in large uniform areas of shadow in the GH1 shots at ISO1600, although it's so slight that I've not noticed before. I certainly can't see any hint of this at ISO 400 as I can barely see any noise. If I do some post processing to bring out the noise (sharpening, exposure, contrast etc.) there's certainly no banding in any of the images I've looked at. Other than that, I'd say the character of the noise is fairly similar on the 2 cameras - I really couldn't say which was finer grained.

The biggest difference is simply in the amount of noise - the ISO 800 shots on the G1 look very close to the ISO 1600 shots on the GH1. (I'm not sure which looks better, to be honest - the GH1 looks smoother, but has the trace of banding). Where I can't see any noise in the GH1 ISO 400 shots, I can in the G1, although it's not a problem unless the image is under exposed. For me, the GH1 has pretty much a full stop improvement in noise performance over the G1, which makes it a worthwhile upgrade.

well it seems the QC on the GH1 sensor is a bit hit and miss !

well it seems the QC on the GH1 sensor is a bit hit and miss !
I'll be able to check tomorrow, had an 'order despatched' email from Harrisons.

Icing on the cake? - speaking to them, they tell me that virtually all the ones they had in were late 09 models, and thus hackable ;)

Having said that, I'm not counting any chickens just yet - but it would be an unexpected bonus if it wasn't v1.34 firmware.

The QC with the whole of the GH1 was a bit hit and miss judging by various reports of strap lugs falling off, whatever. There are virtually no similar reports about the G1.

Were they made in the same factory I wonder? Anyway this isn't intended as a GH1-bashing comment otherwise I wouldn't even consider buying one, but it's always struck me as a bit odd that the flagship of the range seems to have the most QC issues.

Yes, good points. Somehow the metal skin of my GF1 and "made in Japan" on it just inspire more confidence in me with that cam than with my GH1

So they really did sell like hot cakes. Cool.

If anyone with a 4/3rdsDSLR dosn't have the 40-150 they bloomin well should have! Superb bit of kit. £80 still. (I've got both :) )

I agree, it's a superb optic for that price, and with an adapter it's superb on my G1 & E-P1 as well. I don't even have a 4/3 DSLR and I still had to get it!

It depends on what you have planned for the camera, my choice would be (and indeed was) the GF1 + 20mm as it's compact and offers excellent low light performance. However as a general purpose lens it's obviously limited as you've no wide angle and no telephoto, I find the 14-45mm too bulky for the GF1 though and makes the small body pointless.
