I got the following email today from my authorized Nikon dealer.
Thought I would post it here for everyone's information.

This is a short note to everyone that asked to be contacted with any news
about the upcoming Nikon D1 Professional Digital Camera.
Nikon has stated that they will be controlling the allocation of the D1 to
Professionals, Companies, and Individuals that have an existing Purchase
Order. Further, they estimate that it will be 9-12 months before any
dealers have any "extra" cameras, and that they will be sent out on an
allocation basis until then.
We are in the process of filling out our allocation request from Nikon and
need the following if you plan on purchasing a D1:
1) Place an order for a Nikon D1 if you have not already done so.
2) If you are a professional or are purchasing on behalf of a company or
institution, please fax a copy of your Purchase Order to 616-343-6410.
3) If #2 does not apply (you are in individual consumer), you should place
an order now anyway.
