D3s @ Arches National Park

Thanks, folks. I do, indeed, have more; but I'm trying to work through them slowly since it will be a while before I get back there.

Great work, great conversion. Love the light.

Delicate Arch. Just a fabulous place!! C&C welcome!

Nice shot, but I'm thinking a bit too much sharpening; it's starting to look like a "colorform" pasted on the backdrop.
I have no idea what a "a "colorform" pasted on the backdrop" means but I agree that the sharpening needs to be dialed back just a slight touch. There's the faintest hint of haloing beginning to show at some edges. However, the OP was able to draw out striation & detail in the sandstone around the base of the arch that can get lost in color versions (I'll find out whether I was able to capture such detail soon as I begin working on images from Delicate Arch taken a week ago). Having said this, I think B&W is the wrong treatment for this view of the Arch. Cache Valley behind the arch being so very colorful is a loss in B&W.

This is a really nice photograph. I really like the angle of the light. If it were my shot I would try lightening the sky a bit and darkening the clouds a bit. Then I would try to increase the contrast in the arch itself a little and see what I thought. Then I'd probably erase that layer and leave it just as it is, but at least I would have seen what those changes do for the shot. One of the famous Studebaker designers said to never leave well enough alone, and I'm as guilty of that as anyone. And, it hasn't made me the slightest bit famous.

The colours over there are awesome.
I do not understand the B&W choice you've made.

In November, I have to give a talk to our camera club on how to convert a photo to b&w so I have several weeks to become an expert.

I know how to do it but I'm not sure how to do it the BEST way. Or is there a best way?

Could you tell me your technique? I like the wide tonal range you achieved, something my b&w's don't usually have.

I don't disagree with you and Rick that the colors here are fantastic, but my choice of B&W was to some degree dictated by the backlighting of the arch and the walls of the plateau in the distance at the time of day when this was shot. I could have pushed the saturation and contrast but I think it would have looked over-processed. I can certainly understand why you might make a different decision. Thanks to both of you for the thoughtful comments.
