The Traveller8 is marketed as a more portable replacement for umbrellas. It's definitely an improvement over using an omni-bounce. I'm not sure if this is a particular issue with the AF540, but the flash head's vertical angle adjustment isn't tight enough to hold the traveller8 at intermediate angles. That's not an issues as I have the flash mounted to a camera tripod with a ball head, but if you were using a light stand with a fixed head , it might be a problem.

Is it stiff in the cone part, how small does it pack away, what keeps it on the head? Care to post some photos of the unit to show how it works? Very interested if you want to take the time.

Thank you
Russell

Russel,

This is what the critter looks like; It is assembled by velcro in the main- the strap around the flash head is attached via velcro (is is rubberised on the section that is in contact with the flash, so nothing is "stuck" on), and then the hood bit attached to the strap.

The velcro is quite tough, suggest that it shouldn't wear out quickly, but a bit tricky to position- if you get it wrong, it takes an amount of force to separate the bits, enough that you need to take care how you grip the flash head whilst doing it.

i don't think travellr8 is designed as an alternative to umbrellas. it's not big enough. the new traveller16 is more suited to be an umbrella replacement.
