I am not sure about this decision. I think it will take something away from the brand, almost cheapen it in a way. I like to own a camera made by a company dedicated to making precision photographic instruments, just my view.

I kind of agree, if you stretch the brand too wide into too many things it just becomes generic and loses impact, its diluting the brand.

I agree. But, on the plus side, if history repeats itself, Leica will soon follow suit and then you will have an $8000 camera phone to show off with a nice red dot!

Well, we can be saddened, but the dastardly deed has been done and, once again, Panasonic has failed to consult its fan base for advice. I just can't understand this company. Maybe what they are really saying is that this marks the beginning of the end of cameras as cameras. It's becoming impossible to find a stills only camera. Which, in truth, is my preference. Now I will have to accept a cameracorderphone. :-)

We all know that Panasonic makes most electronic items, as well as vacuum cleaners. However, the brand name Lumix, to my knowledge, has been the exclusive name for their camera line.

IMO, the writing's on the walls. Convergence isn't even the future anymore...it's 2005.

These comments are always laughable but sadly ignorant as well. Panasonic isn't a co-op and even if it was, co-ops consult representative members, not the general public.

While the business model has drawn some criticisms, it seems fairly easy to understand ...
What difference does it make? Are Canon cameras any worse because they make copiers, scanners, printers?
Indeed. Panasnic execs estimate they already make over 1 million different products so what's the difference if we add another.

But can it handle English muffins and toaster strudel? Now there's a test. And how about bagels? Huh? Sure, your Lumix can do toast all day long, but throw a couple of pop tarts in and we'll see a real test for your Lumix. Just wait til Canon gets into the toaster business! Presenting the new 4-slice Rebel!

So, I guess if you want a camera that doesn't have voice mail, this may be the time to buy. The times, they are a changin'.

Panasonic FZ45/TZ6/Pentax 430
Hi from England

This is a sign of a logical, ongoing, hybridization process: mobile phone; camera-phone; camera-video-phone;.....camera-video-tv-toaster-microwave-vacuum cleaner-phone.

Don't give them any more 'ideas'. Haven't you seen their 'innovative and fairly priced' M9Ti! :P

I've nosed around the website but can't see any red dots or even a Lumix logo. There's some cute looking mobiles that I'll manage without though: http://panasonic.jp/mobile/
The site is not up and running yet- http://panasonic.jp/mobile/lumixphone/

We'll have to wait (if we can manage) until the 5th.

I see this as inevitable. Panasonic had to take a serious step into the camera phone market and using the Lumix name to get attention will probably serve them well. I personally don't care as long as they keep up the outstanding quality of their normal cameras at the same time. Nikon makes things like the Coolpix L22. That doesn't stop anyone from taking their DSLRs very seriously indeed.

I just hope that whatever they come out with, they'll have a firmware
update to allow me to adapt it to the 1978 Panasonic microwave
(above) that I still use on a daily basis.

Maybe come out with a nice carrying bag so I can hoist this puppy
on my back and head out for a days shoot?

At this point, I have to put it on "defrost" in order to take
a decent picture. Doesn't make too much "noise" either.
Very little "pp" (post parboiling) required.

It's a bugger gettin' it on a tripod though in order
to get those full moon shots.

Thanks
Kim
