LX5 and UV filter

My daughter received her LX5 late this afternoon (Aussie time).

When she screws the 46mm UV filter in(after removing the ring) - the camera tells her to remove the lens cap!
According to the manual she needs an adapter to use the filter.

She lives 700kms from me, so I can't really help her.

Can anyone clarify this, please?

Yes - you have to have the LA6 adapter. If she is 'screwing' the filter on to the lens, she is going to damage something (the filter, lens or both) if not careful. There is, in fact, no thread on the lens itself, just a lip that the lens cap clicks into.

The LA6 fits on outside the actual lens. There is a collar around the lens which you take off and the adapter then screws on instead. The (52mm) filter then screws into the other end of the adapter.

There's no work-around for this and the camera is not faulty - precisely the opposite. It just sensing that there's something in the way of the lens and therefore not allowing it to extend to try to avoid damage.

Suggest you get your daughter to look on the Panasonic site at accessories. The LA6 (specifically for the LX5 - the old one for the LX3 will not fit!). You can get the adapter from 'buyfromjapan' on ebay. Reliable seller. The thread for the filter she will then need is a 52mm.

Hope that helps.

Was going to reply, but By-eye beat me to it. He's nailed it. Those 46mm filters from the LX3 will be useless for the LX5. (Unless you do what I do and just hold the filters (Usually a c.polarizer) up to the lens when you need it. This technique won't be useful if you're trying to just protect your lens w/a UV filter). Keep in mind that the needed adapter (a black metal tube) makes your LX5 quite bulky, and the tube is fiddly to take on and off.

If she does feel she really needs that UV filter on her LX5, you might convince her to wait a few months--those adapters will become much more available, and fine quality knock-offs will be available for CHEAP. (At least this is what happened for the LX3)

Thanks guys for the swift replies.

A slight misunderstanding when she ordered the UV filter!
Fortunately, not expensive and she may be able to return it.
