I see on Ebay some inexpensive Canon grips for the 1000D and T2i for $30 from a Canadian seller. Is there anything wrong with these other then they are not official Canon pieces?

I got one from a Chinese seller a few years ago for my old 400D and to be honest when i compared it with my friends canon grip , it was hard to tell the difference. In fact the interior AA adaptor was identical .

Canon loves to sell DSLRS. Why? Because it can continue to rip you ff with overpriced camera accessories for years to come. A battery pack for $40, piece of plastic (lens hood) for $35, HDMI cable for $70. You probably do want genuine Canon camera and lenses, but virtually everything else is a huge rip off; 3rd party products generally performs equally well and sometimes better.

Opteka's grips are (I believe) identical to the Canon grip... to the point where I'm pretty sure Opteka is the OEM for Canon.

Don't know about the canadian seller, but I got a third party grip from Hong Kong for my T1i and it works great. Grip, two extra lion batteries and the AA battery holder all for less than $50.

I really like it and about half the price of the Canon brand.

Pretty much what everyone else has been saying. I have Opteka grips on my XSi and my daughter's XTi and they work just fine. My daughter is rather rough on equipment and we had to reglue a corner of her rubber covering, but I honestly think the same thing would have happened to a genuine Canon grip. For the beating she's given the camera and battery grip, they have held up rather well.

Bought grip for T2i with 2 batteries for $53 on Amazon from New Haven. They really impressed me with their customer service. I absolutely LOVE the grip. Aside from getting the ability to use 2 batteries and AA's, the portrait shooting is the bomb now.

Was very nervous about ordering non canon product but
just got the opteka grip for my 500d at half canon price.
Amazed at finish and fit - cant believe the canon could be any
better - controls work fine - they seem identical other than the
missing badge and price !

I received my $30 grip. Seems ok. Does it need both batteries in it to turn on the camera? I tried it with 1 I have and it wouldn't turn on. I do have a second battery coming, but I wanted to start using it now. Any comments? Maybe the batteries are wired in series in order to work?

You didn't insert your battery correctly. AFAIK, all grip are wired in Parallel in order to maintain 7.2 voltage requirement. Parallel wiring allow you to use just ONE battery. My grip works beautifully with just 1 battery.

If a grip is wired in Series ( requiring two battery ), than the voltage would become cumulative 7.2v + 7.2v = 14.4v and fried your camera.
