Newborn mother/baby pose suggestions

I've done a couple of shoots with babies as favours for friends:

These were both shot with a 4ft cubelite and some off camera and on camera bounced flash.

I bought a purple blanket and sheepskin rug specifically for doing these shoots!

I also did another shoot this last weekend which I did at my house and used a bowl (aka papasan) chair which is quite cute!

There's still one photo that I want to get that I've not managed yet (and probably won't til I have my own child) and that is of a baby lying on its front nude with its legs tucked in on a cushion or folded up blanket. I can't find an example right now unfortunately.

Just search for 'baby' on google image search or flickr and I'm sure you'll find plenty of inspiration!

My favorite shot is one of the mother nursing the baby with the father looking over her shoulder; all eyes are lovingly on the baby.

The way I have staged this shot in the past is to do a fair amount of shooting first so that everyone is relaxed. I then tell the couple what I want to do and how I want to stage the shot. I then hand the couple a large piece of white lace, turn my back and have them drape the mother's top. I then turn around and take the pictures. Everyone feels comfortable and I get nice pictures.

Caution. I did this once with a mother and her 11 month old baby. At that age babies squirm a lot and the baby just kicked the lace off. Fortunately the mother was a figure model so we did get some great shots. You can see that album at: http://www.pbase.com/jcassatt/katya
