FZ100 Optimum Settings?

When the first few images were posted it was suggested that they were not sharp enough, & that the best settings would be to increase Sharpness to +1 or even 2.

More recently I note people have been using Sharpness set to -1 or 2.

Why the change, is it because more is now understood about the in camera processing?

What settings are current owners using?

I don't own the camera, but have been following the chatter.

Current best guesses seems to be that the FZ100 is fairly aggressive with both noise reduction and sharpening. By dialing those settings back, more information is retained in the photo, and better results can be obtained by judicious post processing.

Moreso than with other models in the FZ line, the appropriate settings seem dependent on what you intend to do with the camera. If you want to use it just as a point&shoot with no post-processing, then aggressive settings may be best. IF you want to retain information in the file for possible later post-processing, then less aggressive setting may be best.

Again, I don't own the camera, so can't speak from experience, I'm just trying to summarize my understanding of what I've heard.

I do not own an FZ100 (yet) but it looks like anything goes at this stage. +1 x4 has produced some good results but have also seen anything from -2 to +2NR with good effect. I think people won't settle till Panasonic release a firmware update.

You should set the sharpness to +1 if you don't pp your fotos. Reduzing sharpness to -1 to -2 will allow you better adjustments with pp. That's all. This will also work fine with the settings for NR.

There are no best settings though. Each one has to find best settings himself.

Hi

Initially the recommendation was -1 on Saturation and NR. But recently mackey1001 posted some photos on the forum - see subject: "FZ100 - just got mine (pics) "ok", but firmware update needed" ( http://forums.dpreview.com/forums/read.asp?forum=1033&message=36222873 ), and these used +1 settings on everything - and I thought they were pretty good straight out of the camera, minimising PP.

I've subsequently changed my settings, and while I didn't manage to get to the park this weekend, I did post the following picture from the garden using +1 on everything.

More experimentation is required :-)

what do you think, what are the best settings if i want to use the FZ100 close to its maximum zoom, in good light?
NR -1, Sharpness +1?

Since I olways post-process the images I care about, I set NR to its loweest value (-2) to avoid any chance of blurring. Any NR (generally destructive to some extent) is done after caprure and well controlled.

With the same reasoning I should set SH to -2 to avoid all possibility of halos and other artifacts. However, I set SH to a higher value so that any lack of sharpness I see on the camera LCD is probably due to poor focus. If I see any artifacts I llower SH and re-shoot.

In general, film settings are CTR=0, SH=+1, SAT=0, NR=-2
