Hi,

I took some shots at the weekend and noticed a blurry, black line on them. This not the first time I have noticed this line. I took some shots in Penzance a month ago and they were visible then. I put it down to the filter I was using.

I took some test shots against the sky at home last night and couldn't see it.

Any ideas whether this is a "hair in lens" or something on the sensor? I'm erring away from a dirty sensor as I think it would appear on all photos if that were the case.

Thanks for your help.

It could be a hair on the sensor, but it would be rare. You can of course easily check that by just looking (put camera in sensor clean mode to expose the sensor).

The curved shape of the line makes me suspect it has to do with the shutter, which makes an arced move more or less like what we see in the image. You can easily verify that by taking a picture of a white wall to see if the arc goes all the way across the frame. We have seen images with a darker or lighter arc (mostly lighter but either way is possible I guess) and it was indicative of imminent shutter failure.

A shutter failure sounds worrying, and expensive, but I agree with the samples that masak posted it looks like that could be the case. I will try photographing a white wall tonight, at a variety of focal lengths and speeds using a tripod and see what the results look like.

Thanks for your replies.
