A very uncivil War!

Jack:

Yes ..... first use of the machine gun (Gattling Gun), first battlefield use of the repeating rifle (Spencer Rifle), improved canon rifling for better accuracy, etc.

Unfortunately, the military's war fighting tactics had not kept pace with the weaponry. Going against weapons like that, in massed columns of men, was sheer suicide. Thus, the thousands killed and wounded in a very short time in fighting, such as the Gettysburg Battle of the Wheat Field:

And, no, I didn't take the photo. I'm old, but not THAT old! :-)

............ I keep coming back and looking at your images.

Because I'm very interested in history and the various types of reenactments, I have looked at hundreds of images taken during the events. Without a doubt, your photos are some of the best reenactment photos I have ever seen. This is a compliment for both the camera and the photographer. You definitely have that elusive creative "eye" for this type of imaging.

As the Navy guys say, "GOOD ON YOU!". Keep them coming!

What a fantastic series, Steve. I agree with Dave, the b/w shots just add to the authenticity of the compositions. I really enjoyed looking at these.
Take care,
Daniel

Pretty slick stuff !!!

I really enjoyed going through this series numerous times.

Maybe next time they do this they could mix things up a bit? You know, like have the ****'s fight the Confederates, etc. :-)

Thanks for sharing .....

Thanks Peg, there are a number of dedicated organisations of these kind of things, The American Civil War and of course our own English Civil War (1642-1651) who tour regularly imparting education with mock battles.

Steve
Glad you were desperate. Because I surely enjoyed the results. I didn't know there was large interest in US Civil War reenactment on your side of the world.

Thanks!

My advice - get the FZ, see how you go and worry about a G camera in a few years.
I have an FZ10 which I used for six years until recently and it was great.

Steve
Just when I was starting to settle on the FZ 35 or 40, here you come along to tempt me with the G series again.

Beautiful shots.

Thanks again Dave,

Well you win some - you lose some! And thankfully we lost em'.

Steve
Terrific set. The black and white add authenticity to the reenactment. Love the angle of the archer shot.

What, no revolutionary war reenactnent? I didn't know you paid so much attention to the civil war. After all you had already lost the colonies.

So...during these reenactments is it always the same outcome or do you vary things in any way or do you 'tweak' things historically on occasions :D

There was a really good/humorous documentary on the BBC recently about how the South has been 'portrayed' on TV and films over the years from the perspective of the narrator who is himself from there. Great stuff.

There are some more pics on my site should you be interested Bill.

Steve
OUTSTANDING shots! And a GREAT looking General Lee!

As you can imagine, we have many such reenactments here in the former colony! And, the Civil War era reenactments are always well attended. Down here in the South, folks refer to the Civil War or War Between the States as "the War of Yankee Aggression" and a lot of them still seem to be fighting it and saving their Confederate Money for when the South rises again! :-)

Absolutely interesting, beautiful, and informative photos! The archer is easily my favorite among a bunch of excellent photos. I also took a peak at your Smugmug galleries and enjoyed your photos of Andalucia - Spain is #1 on to must visit list, and in Spain, Andalucia / Seville are highest priorities. Very well done and thanks for sharing...

cheers,

john
