NEX 5 for streaming video ?

Hello,

I am considering buying this camera as an update to a sony H50.

will this camera work for streaming (using something like Ustream website) video with a computer? If yes s the connection made by hdmi or firewire?

With the H50 connecting to the computer via USB I was only able to download pictures and never get live video on the computer.

If your computer can capture HDMI input, then yes. The HDMI connection shows "live" output of the NEX, identical to what you'd see on its screen. If you can't capture and stream HDMI, however, no... it doesn't work over USB (for streaming that is... normal USB mass mode, etc works fine. I hope someday we'll be able to remote capture with Lightroom et al like it can with certain Canikon systems but thats not possible today).

I think the answer is no then...

I thkin USTREAM and such websites only work when the camera attached is recognized just like a webcam on the computer is.

Well, the answer is actually a ... maybe.

With an HDMI capture card, say something like the AverMedia AverTV capture card:

It would certainly be possible to capture the NEX HDMI (or any other HDMI, Component or Composite) output. If that would work directly with UStream, I really don't know as I've never used it... But I can't imagine UStream doesn't work with capture cards of any kind. Maybe someone else that has experience with it could answer better.

It certainly would be cheaper to just get a $30 webcam, however.

One thing as well if you get it streaming is that fact that you might get the 'overheating issue'.

Got it today while shooting video non-stop for 30-mins+... a bummer but again, NEX is not a VIDEO CAMERA!

My experience connecting NEX 5T in 2021.
Required 1) Mini HDMI-compatible to HDMI Cable (1.5 $ aliexpress)
2) Rullz 4K Video Capture Card USB 3.0 2.0 HDMI Video Grabber Record Box (10$ aliexpress)
3) OBS Studio (For youtube)
Five minutes and I started the broadcast.
There are 2 points
1) shooting data from the screen (ISO and more..) is displayed on the video, but it can be cropped in OBS Studio.
2) My not new battery was enough for 2 hours. (Solved by adapter (aliexpress $15) 5V USB NP-FW50 Dummy Battery AC-PW20 DC Coupler Power Adapter)
