Curious as to whether anyone has tried to apply photos to canvas using heat press and the needed transfer paper? If so, how was quality?

This used to be how most pro labs did canvas. I am not sure what you mean by transfer paper but the process I am talking about involved getting a photographic print, peeling the emulsion layer off it and heat pressing it onto canvas. It was a particularly tricky and risky process, very few labs do that anymore, because it is so much better, easier and cheaper to print direct to canvas. This will give you the most reliable results.

Hard to see any reason to do this as a print company will do this for you and probably a lot more economically.

I don't normally refer people to the pro forum form the beginners, but this doesn't sound like a question you'll get an answer for here, and this kind of printing is really pro territory.

If you mean photos using the iron on transfer paper to transfer them to t-shirts, etc., the quality turns out good. As to washability of the fabric, the pictures deteiorate over time.

Thanks for help. RayHff is closer to what I had in mind, except would want to use a heat press, rather than iron, and the better professional heat transfer paper. I was more concerned how this would look on canvas material, rather than t-shirt.

If you're looking for high quality reproduction, transfer paper isn't the way to go. These products will have a poor color gamut and low DMax ratings. The easiest way to go is inkjet canvas. I use a Epson 9800 printing on Breathing Color Lyve canvas. It's the best I've found so far in the inkjet world. Personally even though I print most of my canvas I still prefer the old transfer method. As someone else said, you take a photographic print, roll back the emulsion, heat press it to canvas and spray. Looks really rich for your high end clients : )
