Hello,

I am seeking some advice regarding lenses for the G11. I am a beginner and I don't know good lense manufacturers. I have come across Opteka, which are very affordable, Lensmate (not sure of quality or pricing) and Raynox, which have some very expensive lenses (seem to be out of my price range). If you guys could please suggest some more manufacturers it would be greatly appreciated. I really can't see myself spending any more than $200 on a lense.

Thank you very much for your help.

The G11 already comes with a lens from one of the foremost lens manufactures around: Canon.

Thanks, but not exactly the help I was looking for. I'm looking for an additional zoom lens, wide angle lens and macro lens.

The manufacturers he mentioned make lenses that screw onto the G11 lens via the filter threads.

Personally I wouldn't do this, it would degrade the lens, but others do this without complaint. If you were going to spend hundreds of dollars though, I would trade the G11 in on a dSLR. You can probably sell the G11 for $450 and that would get you a decent used dSLR and allow you to invest in more lenses.

You should post this question in the Canon Talk forum, where folks that use the G11 hang out. The Canon G series cameras require an adapter tube connected to the camera body, and then you attach either a tele or wide conversion lens. Canon sells the TC-DC58D tele lens for the G10/G11, but it is only a 1.4x magnification. This lens sells for about $110 on Amazon. You must also buy either the Canon LA-DC58K adapter tube ($33), or some other brand, such as the Lensmate series.

Canon does not make a specific wide conversion lens for the G10/G11, but you can use wide converters designed for the G7/G9, as I do for my G9 and G11. Again, post this on the Canon Talk forum for point and shoot models, and you will get better responses for your specific camera.

I am using the Canon TC-DC58C (2.0x) tele lens from my G9 on my new G11. The TC-DC58D tele lens recommended by Canon for the G11/G10 is only a 1.4x factor, so I prefer the longer 2.0x of my lens. The TC-DC58C sells on Amazon for about $108. And, as I mentioned on the Beginners forum, you will also need an adapter tube to attach it to the G11. The Canon LA-DC58K adapter sells for about $33 on Amazon. Be advised that adding a tele lens requires you to zoom out near the max 140mm for the G11 to eliminate the vignetting caused by the tube + lens. This is normal.

The Canon tube is plastic, so some folks do not want it. However, if you get one, and attach it to the lens, and leave it on, then you won't have to deal with it anymore. It will always easily attach to the camera via the bayonet method without issues. If you think you would rather have the "better" Lensmate tube, then you will have to pay more to buy parts A and C for a total of $49 plus S&H. The Canon tube consists of parts A and C already, and is intended to be used with the tele lens.

I ended up getting the Lensmate tubes, because I needed all three sections (A + B + C) to let me use tele and wide lenses, plus close-up lenses (filters), and 72mm filters. I also only bought one set, so it is easier to add and remove components with the Lensmate system. It sounds like you only want a tele lens, so why buy more than you need?
