Canon Rebel XSi v. Canon G11

ThAnks
Please explain how you use icontrast.
I accepted that the G11 would have poorer dynamic range than my SLR but it constantly surprises me.

I use the icontrast feature and also turn the contrast down in the custom settings. I took the G11 to San Diego with bright sun every day.... very harsh lighitng conditions. I don't think my SLR would have done any better.

Maybe the SLR does have more DR but the G11 gets more accurate exposures due to the live histogram display and more metering information.

Anyhow, I was really surprised how well it did in that nasty lighting around water and all.

"I prefer to think that Canon simply have the best sensor technology.

no doubt sony has thrown $$$ at sensors recently, which is why the Nikon D3x and the Sony nex-5 are quite good. "

Canon S90 and G11 use the same sensor...purchased from Sony. New Samsung uses the same sensor also and has an F1.8 aperture.

Sony NEX cameras are even smaller than the G11 and out-spec them in just about every single way. Olympus E-PL1 is roughly the same size as the G11 and has much better Dynamic Range and High ISO.

Canon G11 does have some cool dials and rangefinder style though.

Body perhaps...

With a 28-140 f2,8-4,5 these Sonys should look like a Bazooka :D

Then I photographed newspapers with the focal length of the lens set at wide angle, medium range and telephoto. I used F/4(the widest aperture of the lens), f/5.6 and f/8. I repeated this for ISO 100,200, 400, 800, and 1600.
Your test is flawed. Newspapers are mostly black and white, with clearly defined areas and little detail. This works very well for the noise reduction algorithms, and at base ISO a camera with more MPs will win this test. But try to photograph real subjects, like a tree against a sky, grass, fur, feathers, etc. You will see how the NR of the G11 ruins some of the fine details.

Ep1 has worse dynamic range then g11. Look at dxomark.

DxO Mark does show the G11 as slightly better than the E-PL1 up until ISO 200 where it flip flops...strange. I remembered they also had the Nikon D5000 as better than all of its competitors though and that wasn't correct. It's another data point to consider though.

Wonder what the Samsung with the same sensor and F1.8 will do at ISO 200 and under.

The DXO marks are weird. I have seen on some cameras where dpreview has a DR test showing a range then look at the DXO and it will say the complete opposite. I don't know what to think about DXO.

Dxomark is the best in the industry.

I think these are two of the most relevent points I have read in so many forum posts, well said
