Apple seeded a new version of 10.6.4 to its developer community for testing today. One of the primary areas they are focusing on (apparently) is editing while in full screen mode in both Aperture & iPhoto. That is one area where I continue to get an occasional hang, so hopefully this will fix that.

I downgraded to 10.6.2 where the issue with full screen editing in Aperture is much less prevalent. I will wait a while before upgrading to make sure that others report no further issues. I might also load 10.6 on an external drive, upgrade it to 10.6.4 and try it out from there first.

I am doing full screen editing in Aperture 3.03 under SL 10.6.3 every day and never noticed any problems so it would be interesting to see if I am just lucky

What kind of problems do you have with full screen editing in Aperture?

slappo, it's a known issue affecting some machines. The NVIDIA 7300 GPU seems especially prone to it and Apple says it's up to NVIDIA to issue a firmware update. Here is one of many threads on the subject - http://forums.dpreview.com/forums/read.asp?forum=1017&message=35112483

Thanks for the info.

I have a GeForce 8600 RT so I am on the lucky side here. I do have some glitches in Photoshop CS4 that Adobe blames on other parties so I know how frustrating it can be.

Hope you both will get a satisfactory solution soon.

iMac i& with ATI Radeon HD 4850.

Full screen hangs reliably when I select color auto curves then color auto levels. The really annoying thing about this type of SBBD is that when in full screen you cannot command tab to another app to force quick Aperture. I've found no trick to solve it. Requires a total hard shut down and reboot.

Not a real problem cuz the regular viewer without thumbnails is plenty big on a 27".

I also don't understand why the Aperture Fullscreen Mode is that much modal. While it LOOKs better and has more screen estate for the image itself it does not allow access to the menu nor to Comand-TAB. Both things work pretty well in Lightroom.

As a result I', working 100% of my time in Fullscreen mode in Lightroom but only rarely while in Aperture...

Apple is notorious for violating its own human interface guidelines. With the introduction of OS X, Apple strongly discouraged the use of modal dialogs and windows. A main window should never be modal. In some cases a dialog can be modal, but never a window. Also, there shouldn't be anything that is universally modal. You should always be able to use Command-Tab.

If you get a hang or a freeze while in Full Screen Mode, CMD-Option-ESC will get you out. I find that it either unfreezes me, or at least gets me to a Force Quit screen. No reboot required.

Yeah, I experienced the full-screen lock up in iPhoto while editing a RAW file on my week-old 13" MBP with 320M graphic. I think I was able to alt-tab to Finder, and thence to Force Quit.

Kind of scary because I work with RAW a lot and was thinking of going to Aperture. It didn't look good if this was happening on plain old iPhoto...

the release notes from Apple seem to indicate that the issue reported here has now been solved. A few users on the Apple support groups and here at dpreview.com have confirmed that their systems are now working correctly. Hopefully that's it for this issue. I am still going to wait before moving from 10.6.2 a little while longer.

I am not so sure these screen freezes are due to aperture and iphoto I have a 2010 17 in macbook pro using the 330M graphics and have also got screen freezes with games and other applications

Full Screen mode in Aperture is Modal because it truly is "Full Screen", not just kind of full screen as in LR. In LR, in order to get into full screen, you have to blow away the sidebars and menus and slideshow with "shift-tab" then hit the lights out twice, and the image still doesn't fill the screen, and to get to adjustments you have to "bump" the edges of the screen. Aperture goes into a true full screen mode by just pressing the "F" key. Brings up the inspector HUD with full Library, Adjustments, and Metadata access by pressing the "H" key. Has access to the control bar tools at the top of the screen, and the filmstrip on any of the three sides of the screen. You can now move backwards to the "Events" type view, and the full screen browser as well. This is just so much better than anything in LR called "Full Screen".
As a result I', working 100% of my time in Fullscreen mode in Lightroom but only rarely while in Aperture...

Only my opinion. It's worth what you paid for it. Your mileage may vary! ;-}

Same as me.

Upgraded to 10.6.4 right away and no full screen hangs yet either.
