The only official, Canon remote shutter option for the G11 is to buy a physical cord that plugs into the camera. Otherwise, you have to buy a third party remote.
 
I bought one of these (below) from amazon.co.uk - works like a dream, but no bulb function. It doesn't wake the camera up from standby, so I leave the camera on, (power save off) and trigger it whenever I wish. The signal goes straight through the house and to the far end of a 100 foot rear garden with no probs at all.

I then did an experiment to see how long the camera would remain on before the battery ran out - it lasted 16 (sixteen) hours.
