I am looking to upgrade the kit lens on my 450D, I have not got a huge budget so the field is limited. I also need a lens that is about the same physical size as the kit lens.

I have already a Tamron 70-300 and a Sigma 10-20. But I need a decent walk around lens I have thought about a Sigma 18-50mm f/2.8-4.5 DC OS HSM or the Sigma 17-70mm F2.8-4.5 DC Macro are these lenses good choices?

the new 15-85 if you dont need f2.8 and dont want the 17-55f2.8 which is a great walk around

Thank's for that, but who makes this lens and how much money is it to buy.

Canon. Current street is approx. $720.

As a cheaper walkabout option, you could also consider the Tamron 17-55mm 2.8. There is a version with stabilisation (denoted VC), and also one without.
Regarding sharpness, generally the one without appears to get better reviews .

Do you have the IS versxion of the kit lens? The reason I ask, is if you do , what do you want to do that you can't do with the kit lens. If not, the suggestions offered seem excellent to me.

Check this link:

When I bought this lens I wasn't expecting much because of a couple of reviews. It's not a professional lens for sure, but it continues to perform beyond my expectations every time I use it.(which seems to be most of the time)

Great walk around lens for me, but, really check it out carefully as the term "walk around" means different things to different people. Have fun.

Yes I do have the IS kit lens version and on the whole I am pleased with it, but not over the moon about it, the focus is too soft for my type of photography (mainly landscape, that why I have the Sigma 10 -20). I have always felt that the kit lens is just a beginners lens fine to get acquainted with the camera but not that great a piece of glass if you want to go enlarge your photo over 10x 8.

I have now decided on the Sigma 17-70mm f/2.8-4.5 DC Macro OS HSM and have ordered one from Callumet at £329.99 there is s three week back order on the item as of 10th May 2010. No one in the UK seems to have any in stock at present except the high end price shops.
Thanks for all the suggestions guys

Seems you already got your lens, but I would second the 15-85mm suggestions. Canon has the lens on special now ($699 from their website)... cheaper at other online locations.
