of the new and improved dpreview?

when i click on a pic the pic expands and i get to see my name, like i dont know who i am. i also get to see the featured articles, like i dont want to look at a pic i just clicked on.

so for me the right side is a waste of space. i dont need featured articles, who is the current posting whore, top threads, or other things like challenges.

so how do i remove them, i really dont need the add, i guess dp does.

When I suggested to just make ones browser window narrower (to hide the right side) as a form of indicating our displeasure at the inability to turn off the right side, I got this reply:
What exactly are you "protesting"? That we don't charge you for the usage of the site?

That's because the ads that pay for the site are over there. You didn't get that?

You never "suggested" anything of the sort.

You never said exactly what it was that you objected to. All you said was
Protest by using 400 px browser windows.
Dpreview should get this metric.
That's the sum total of what you said. No "displeasure at the inability to turn off the right side"

What you actually said (not what you're claiming, in your attempt to repaint yourself as a heroic figure) made zero sense, and Phil asked exactly the right question.
What exactly are you "protesting"?

I think what I said has to be seen in context of all the other posts just prior to mine. My post was meant as a response to all these, but I agree, I should have referenced them.
Against flashing slideshows and flashing picture links to articles. Something a large number of people has been criticising here. They have nothing to do with ads (they probably have something to with pageviews and thus indirectly with ad revenue, but there is fine difference between criticising ads, which I have not done, and criticising site architecture and content, even if the later might used to boost ad revenue).

Yup.

It takes brilliant rhetoric to start a real movement. Think Ben Franklin, Martin Luther, Martin Luther King, etc.

Explain things, coherently and approachably, and people listen.

And with that, I quite agree. This new big "slide sideways every 3 seconds" thing is one of the most annoying bits of web design I've seen in years. To the point where I may set up a script rewriter to neutralize it.

It's a photography equipment site, photographers are bothered by moving ads in a higher proportion than the regular population, and dpReview should have access to that information. They better have better market data than I do.

What I don't get its it's 2010, and dpReview hasn't figured out how to have the main text windows (like the one I'm typing in right now) expand when you change your browser window width.

Which tells me that they don't even track browser window width, so your "metric" is, unfortunately, beyond their capabilities.

I am sure they track it. It is a conscious decision on their part to put all the 'whitespace' around their website content instead of inside it. The examples posted here illustrate the opposite approach:

There is something to controlling your layout and not allow it to ballon like this.

I don't know who's in charge of designing those annoying and flashing ads but it's likely some techno-geek who thinks that just because you can do it technically, you should. Wrong!!

I turn on tunnel vision and really don't see what's flashing on the right side. Now how effective is that. Good ad agencies and ad designers are worth their money. I think some of the ads on this forum will do well to hire some.

It doesn't help an advertiser if I hate flashing ads so much I block them or quit visiting the site altogether.
That is an absolutely valid point. Phil's argument might be that this is not about being nice to each other but pure business, that your point goes without saying. And thus, the fact that you mention it, is already breaking the implied business contract by discussing personal feelings ('I hate') which would be a tabu in business relations.

I quite agree, this style is becoming more common and I've reduced my visits to some sites as a result. I recognize ads are important to fund the site, but the implementation via this visual is irritating. At least the challenges slide show was moved to the bottom where I can keep it off the page.

Joe, If you write a blocking script 'll buy a license ;)

Best regards,
Doug

There is a neat Firefox add-on that lets you block any part of a page.

Install Ad Block Plus, and then install the element hiding extension. Once it is installed, on the Ad Block Plus menu there will be a "select element to hide" selection. You'll quickly see how it works.

https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/4364

You don't have to block ads to use this feature, but it does require the ad blocker to be installed and running. Just don't subscribe to an ad blocking list if you want to keep displaying ads.

Using that extension, I find these rules work pretty well:

dpreview.com##DIV.widget.latestGalleries
dpreview.com##DIV.widget.topPosters
dpreview.com##DIV.widget.topThreads
dpreview.com##DIV#widgetChallenges
dpreview.com##DIV.widget.latest-news
forums.dpreview.com##DIV.widget.side-featured

Can't speed up typing with the preview code, however. And closing the Posting Rules doesn't seem to work for me...

Thanks for the tip. Why didn't I think of that. Now I can use the rest of my screen for something productive like playing solitare. I knew there was surely something good that came out of this redesign. With the stuff that was on the left being on top, this works out great.
