Why is my D90 took poorly focus and over exposed photos and poor contrast with my Sigma 100-300mm f/4 APO EX IF HSM while my D70s demonstrates otherwise?

I recently sold my D70 for the D90 and was happy over all with the sharpness that it revealed with my 50mm and its kit lens. However, I was disappointed with the result when hooked up with the Sigma 100-300mm f/4 APO EX IF HSM.

I finally purchase a D70s body only to go with the Sigma 100-300mm as it matched up so well with great contrast and sharpness.

The question is why?

You need to post some sample picture along with the exif data before anyone can give you a meaningful answer. You wouldn’t walk to your mechanics garage and ask him why your car at home won’t start; basically that is what you are doing here with your question.

Any weaknesses in your technique will be more evident with the D90 and its 12MP compared to the D70 and its 6MP. Then more mega-pixels the more technical errors show; I quickly discovered that I had to be a lot more careful with my D90 than I had been with my D50. The flip side is that when you do everything correctly the D90 is the more capable camera.

While amateurs change the camera’s settings; many Pro’s prefer to change the light.

I was just talking to a Nikon dealer today about the Sigma 50-150 2.8 I am considering. I've heard some people have had focus problems. The dealer said if the Sigma supplier is notified of the camera and model, they can update firmware for the lens before shipping as that is usually the source of the problem. The D90 has very complex communication with metering and focus info from the lens, and I suppose this is why the G series nikons work so well . I would assume you could return your lens for a similar fix, Sigma is very good at solving these issues, and your lens is very highly rated.

Thanks. I never thought that camera lens can be upgraded with firmware.

I will perform some test shots when I between the two cameras when I get a chance. Unfortunately, I have deleted all the non keeper photos.

I have specifically tested at various focal length and all out of focus and the contrast was very poor. I was very surprise at first and thought it may be the D90 is at fault but no issue with Nikon Dx lens and my Nikon 50mm 1.8.

When I had my 100-300 a few years ago, I was getting over exposed photos on my D200. I contacted Sigma UK and sent the lens back to them for "calibration". They updated the on chip firmware in the lens and it was all sorted when I got it back. Just an idea ?

Then sold it some time later and still regretting it.
