Softlighters vs. Softboxes?

I've seen alot of positive feedback on the softlighters, and I wanted to get some feedback on how they compare with softboxes.

I currently use a Calument Genesis 200 combined with 580EXs with either a shoot through umbrella, or a small generic brand softbox (12x18).

My aim is to get both softer/directional light, as well as better full body coverage with lights. (When using an umbrella to shoot full body shots, while the waist up is well lit, they legs are often very under exposed.)

I appreciate any advice and input!

I like my Softlighter II with my Alien Bee B1600 and yes it fits over the strobe. I do prefer a softbox if that's my need though, but I did get by with just a softlighter II for a long time. I recently got a softbox and love it too. They are similar, but different. Catch lights from the umbrella are better than rectangles in the eyes, but the nice controlled light from the softbox appeals to me more. You can get a similar effect with the umbrella by feathering it if you need to, so it's almost comparing Fuji apples to Granny Smith Apples. Their similar and only slightly different overall IMO.
