Hi There,

I've just purchased a Nikon D90 with 18-55mm lens + 55-200mm lens.

I am interested in taking black and white photos.

Can i do this with the Nikon?

Thanks,

Rikhi

Yes, go to shooting menu, set picture controls, monochrome.
Have fun
You'll have a lot more fun and get better results if you shoot a regular raw file in color and then process it into B&W using Photoshop (if you have it) or most any other processing program.

That way you can invoke all sorts of traditional B&W photo filters after the fact to get just the look you want. Or get several versions if you wish.

You can use the free trial of Capture NX2 to convert your colour images to black and white too.

As others have said, best to NOT shoot in B&W and do it in post processing if you can.

A very good reason is that once you have shot it in B&W, you can't undo it if you should decide to have it in color. Best to shoot IN color and THEN convert to B&W after the fact because what if you shoot something in B&W and then decide you rather like it in color, then what?

And I would highly suggest you read the manual before you go any further and learn the basics first before trying to do something fancy.

Hi All,

Thank you so much for your input. I'll try it out.

But as the last thread said, I better learn to use the camera basics before trying other things out.

Is there any webiste where I can learn basics of photography using a d90?

Kind Regards,
Rikhi

" learn basics of photography using a d90 "
Thats what the manual is for

You could / should , get a copy of " David Busch's - Nikon D90 " users guide , its better than the manual
