I am just getting started doing my own printing and I am looking for advice / guide on which types of papers to look at and when to use the differences.

Any help or pointing to a reference would be appreciated.

Hi,

I guess there are lots of parameters to look at first. How will you present them (frame, behind glass or no glass; albums; size, etc...

Are you asking about gloss and mate only, or interested in fine art / canvas prints as well?

when do I use Matte, gloss, semi-gloss, luster, art ... papers? I know its personal choice but are their any good generalizations?

I've read on some reviews that baryta papers show their potential better with pigment inks compared to dye inks...

I never used one, so no idea...

Any thoughts?

I am assuming that u r using an inkjet paper with pigment inks. Use matte papers if your photo does not have a broad range of saturated colors or delicate range of deep blacks ( matte papres are particularly good for pastel colors and fine art stuff at the expense of clor depth and dynamic range). Use glossy paper if your photo has a broad range of saturated colors and for full range BW printing. I find that with both Fiber Base and Baryta papers the prints are much more expressive be it matte or gloss and they are also more tactile to the touch, however I would advise u to experiment with cheaper range of resin coated papers untill u have perfected your printing skills.
Enjoy printing
