I've been bouncing back and forth between the Nikon and Fuji forums, noting the opinions of owners of the D100 and the S2, because I've got to purchase several bodies of one or the other for my business.

Is it me or are the colors of the D100 flat and unexciting? The D100 is less expensive than its Fuji counterpart, so since price wasn't a consideration, what swayed you Fuji S2 owners and future buyers to solidify your decision?

Actually in Singapore The S2 is cheaper than D100. Read my new post in Nikon SLR Forum.

I have yet to get the camera, but have decided based on these points:
  • nice pics with good definition and nice colour
  • firewire
  • computer controlled capture
  • SM, microdirve and CF card compatibility
  • easy to obtain batteries
  • flash sync socket
  • low noise (they all have low noise)
  • price more or less the same as D100 and D60 in the UK
I decided against the D60 due to too many complaints about AF (only has 3 focusing points and not the fastest) and the picture review bug. Plus lack of some features.

The D100 decision is harder, basically down to lacking some of the S2 features that I like and the pictures don't seem as good to my eyes.

Can you please elaborate more on the computer controlled capture with S2 ?

I like the fuji Colors better, image quality better, AA Batteries are a plus in my book, and biggies that the D100 was missing, PC Sync. and Firewire transfer. also the S2 will work TTL with the SB 28 you don't have to go out and get the 28 DX. something you don't have to worry about, and secondary to me but since I was familiar with the S1 software I figure the S2 will be less of a learning curve as well

"Through" not "thought". Excuse me for the typo..;-)

U can control capture thought computer connecting the S2 via its
IEEE1394 fire-wire port and managing its functions w/ the HS-2
optional software.

Both the S1 and S2 include what's called by Fuji (cleverly) "Shooting Software"

In the S1 via the USB port and now in the S2 via the IEE1394 (Firewire) port you can control the camera software on your PC.

You can either press the shutter button and have the images stored on your PC's hard drive or you can, among other things, set an interval for pictures to be taken. Almost all of the camera settings you manually control at the camera can be set via the PC.

The auto interval can be from 7 seconds on up. It will calculate how many images can be stored on the available space on your drive and lots of other features.

It's fun.

Thanks to you all, that was very helpful.

This is what I was expecting with current breed of digital SLRs, and lack of this feature on D100 makes my choice simple, I will wait for the Fuji S2 !

When the three (or four including faveon) cameras were announced, I looked at the different ccd types and the theorys behind them and how they matched up with the statements of current users of the cameras using them. I suspected that the S2, because of the special shape of the pixel, could actually give more resolution than conventional the ccd. I believe I am right in that as the statement on resolution for the S2 are while not matching 12million pixels do reach somewhere around 8 million pixel resolution - greater in any case than the D100. The photodiode is larger and thus gives greater color depth also acknowledged by users. The Faveon is the wild card in all of this. For me, the technology of that one is too hard to wrap my mind around. In any case, I think the next generation of that camera will possibly contend with digital backs for a fraction of the cost. Who knows? If I had the bucks I'd purchase a 1D though. I am still wondering about the build quality of the S2. Did Fuji make it any more weather resistant? I guess I'll find out soon as I have one on order. Or Phils review appears.

Image Quality. The S1pro had stunning image quality. And the preview shots that appeared here and there of the S2 were in my mind notably better than the preview shots of other cameras.

I guess I should say "criterion" then, huh?

If you have the option of getting several bodies anyway, why not get some D100's and some S2's? That way, you'd have both sides covered! And since both use compact flash-type media, take Nikon-mount lenses, and can both shoot jpeg, there's little standing in the way of the S2's always being checked out and the D100's sitting on the shelf collecting dust.

MAJOR
  • Image quality - firewire - Nikon lens compatibility
MINOR
  • Several self-timer modes
( actually, that feature improves on the D60 only, the D100 has 4 as well )
  • AA batteries
  • Cost is the same as D100 when you count in accessories included by Fuji
but extra with D100.

Like Mike's idea of buying some of each, then you could be really
objective and selective :-)

Good Luck,
Keith

the most important reason: the quality of the pictures, and then owning a host of nikon flashes, plus lenses. ts

Another + is TTL instead of Nikons D-TTL
1/180 sync via PC connector and ISO 100
as Thom Hogan speculates :))

The rest is pretty pathetic:

I dont like
battery situation
blown up resolution (would prefer a 6MP raw non processed image
instead of only Tiff and JPG in that format, waste of space on the card
missing V shutter (90% of my use is portrait format)
sRgb color space - would prefer AdobeRGB

I will get the next pro level DSLR .. consider the S2 or D100 a
compromise but also consider the current pro models as dated.

The S2 seems to be the better compromise though ...

Joe,

In real estate they say the three reasons for buying property are: Position, Postition and Position.
For me the three principles for a camera are Image, Image and Image.

And, to date, Fuji has delivered this to me. And my test prints for the S2 at 20x30 inches shows they are still delivering.

Agree about the choice of sRGB rather than Adobe RGB. However putting the RAW image into the included software allows for conversion to Adobe RGB.

What is a V shutter? Why is it better for portrait format? What I feel is hanging out with the S2 images are the levels of moire. What is difference between D-TTL vs. TTL ?
