My old point and shoot died recently so i'm looking to replace it. In about a months time i'm also going away surfing with some friends so would like a camera that would be ok to take some nice photos (with the possibility of some video?). Now I don't have the money for a dslr so was thinking that one of the superzooms would be the best way to go (cannon SX1 sony hx1 ?). This way from the beach I should hopefully be able to get "close" to the action - but high noise at high iso's I guess will be of concern?. If anyone has any info as to which one would be better (or any other choices) I'd be grateful for any help.

Well... of course high ISO noise will be a problem, but... (there's always a "but"!)... you don't have the money to buy a DSLR. Period. Then make use of the fact that you'll be shooting surfers - hopefully on a sunny day - and keep the camera at minimun ISO! On a sunny beach you should be able to shoot at 1/500" at f5.6, or f4 at worst, even using ISO 50! Thus you'll be able to get very beautiful photos, even if the "big guys" here sneer at your camera!

As for a brand choice... well, I use Canon. I'm a big fan of Canon. I used for some time an old S2IS superzoom, and I loved it! But I bet each one here will vote for it's favourite brand. Both Canon and Sony are good, respected cameras.

thanks for taking the time to reply. As you said there is always going to be a "but" when you have to try and compromise. Would just like to make sure I'm minimizing it as much as possible given my set of restrictions and not ending up making a bad choice. If anyone else has and hands on info with the sony or cannon (or any other camera they can think of that fits) in similar shooting conditions i'd love to hear how you found your respective camera did.

I was just in the same position as you, trying to find my first camera and deciding a DSLR would be too much. While my budget was lower than yours, I decided on the Panasonic FZ35. I found one used for a great price and couldn't pass it up, and it has also gotten great reviews around the web.

You have some more to spend, so I would really recommend going to a few different stores and just checking out the cameras in your price range. A lot of the newer high- end superzooms are very similar, and a lot of it will boil down to your personal preference in the end. It's best to hold the camera, make sure it feels good and then play around with it a bit and make sure you groove with the camera well. If you don't have this option, you're stuck to website reviews and pictures. This is a good site, but you might also check out dcresource.com and imaging-resource.com for more reviews and comparison pictures. I also found youtube and flickr to be very helpful to see actual people using the cameras I was looking at and to see pictures taken with them.

As far as actual cameras, your aforementioned cameras were all very solid choices. You might also check out the new Fuji HS-10, and the Nikon P100. Good luck finding the right one for you! Peace!

i have had great results with a fuji S100 although if you are travelling it is quite large. you can go to my website if you like and look, i think there are one or two shots of the kite surfing in cannes. it is very easy to manage as well. only oroblem i hae is battery life, its not so great and i usually have a spare in my pocket.
before that i used panasonic FZ models they are all excellent.

the fuji has a bigger sensor so is slightly faster and sharoer but the panaosonic ones are smaller and lighter with better battery life.
