Are all the rage in the DP Review news items this February.

Does anyone else think they just look horrible (at least in the larger formats, whatever about the little pocket and handbag ones).......?

It always seems to be the manufacturers in trouble that offer thier cameras in 'designer' colors.
I don't think the new Pentaxes are meant to be designer edition, merely editions for - mainly - young women who are not looking for a boring, black camera. Also, the K-x (and GF1) is selling like hot cakes, so Pentax doesn't seem to be in trouble, really.

I liked it how DPR filtered news and kept out the clutter. Not sure why news like "pink edition, available in Japan only" get online here.

Adding color is a cheap and easy way to bring excitement and a sense of change to a line whose development of new products has slowed down some due to economic pressure. I'm talking about the more advanced, more 'serious' cameras.

But I don't think we've seen color in the Canon, and Nikon DSLR line up yet. Nor in Olympus. I don't really follow Sony or Panasonic, but my impression is that they haven't gone to color yet. Right now, I think Pentax is the only major brand to go that route.

Now that you've judged the quality of my typing, take a look at my photos. . .

Just my opinion of course but I think it cheapens their image in the marketplace, relegates them (unfairly) to the status of a P/S. I considered Pentax before I bought my Olympus, but if a salesman had said "And look, you can get it in all these colors!" it would have suggested to me that they were aiming it at a not-very-serious photographer and really put me off.

But whatever floats your boat I guess.

If you would refuse to buy the best valued intro level dslr with one of the best high iso jpg performances of any camera on the market because it also has the OPTION of coming in a different color, then that says a lot more about you than anything about someone who might buy it in a color.

I think Pentax is smart to offer products for "fashion conscious" users in order to give themselves a marketing edge.

The Pentax K-x is a great camera, and you still can buy one in black.
You don't have to get one in turquoise or fuschia.

Sure... these wild colors will seem silly to many consumers, but they will appeal to others.

I'd be more concerned if Pentax ONLY offered their cameras in bright colors.
But fortunately, all they have done is given you a wide choice.

Which is exactly the same thing that GM. Toyota, and Ford do...

Personally, I like the charcoal grey Camaro at the end of the third row.
But the teal one is nice too. At the begining of the last row....

Olympus E-30
Zuiko 9-18mm
Zuiko 14-54mm II
Zuiko 40-150mm I
Zuiko 70-300mm
Zuiko 50mm f/2.0 macro

I'm sure every camera maker wishes that they could justify offering a range of colors, because if there's anything that makes a device obsolete faster than technology, so that you have to buy another one and another one faster...it's fashion. Apple changes the colors of their iPod nanos along with their tech updates, to help make the previous line seem obsolete faster.

Absolute Rubbish!!!!

The Lime Green, second row far left, is quite clearly the faster and better equiped model!

Seems a rather desperate ploy from manufactures whose products can't get sufficient sales from those who take photography either seriously or professionally, might as well try the other markets.
