Hi all, this is my first post even though I've been reading (and learning a lot) yours for a long time. I own a K10D and felt very frustated because its low light performance. I was thinking on changing it for another brand (you know) but suddenly de K-x appeared. Yes, I know they're different level cameras, but... I've enjoying with this toy and managed to take some basketball images. Impossible (for me) with my K10d.

I'm not a good photographer but maybe the samples will be interesting for someone who is thinking on buying one.

Sigma 70-200mm f/2.8 and FA 50mm 1.4 lenses and Lightroom

Excuse my poor English.

Very good shutter speeds for what is usually a poorly lit environment.

These are my own humble efforts at f/2.8, 1/90sec, ISO1600 with a K100D:

I never anticipated taking shots at an indoor sports event but over the past 4 months I've attempted to do just that with my K200D. It's not an easy task even using the Pentax 50mm 1.4. I love the K200D but low light shots aren't one of its strengths.

I'm hoping that Pentax will introduce an upgrade to the K200D with at least the low light capabilities and the FPS of the KX. If it does I will be first in line to purchase it. If it doesn't I may still end up with the KX but it won't be without some serious research and considerations of the other camera brands.

Nicely done. The K-x camera is exactly what Pentax needed and I look forward to getting one someday. Thank you for sharing.

I think this is a very good post. I think it helps reinforce what sports photographers have been saying for years - gear DOES matter when it comes to sports shooting.

It looks like the K-X is a very positive step forward for Pentax. The K-7 finally provided decent AF performance but still had high ISO performance less than competition. Now the K-X has corrected the high ISO issue.

The thing others reading this need to realize is the LENS makes a huge difference too. Sigma's 70-200 has their HSM focus motor. And just like ISO and focus tracking in camera matter, so too does the focus motor in the lens.

Nice pics, thanks for sharing... It happens that I recently saw another post in this foum of someone also stating how much more happier he was with the new pentax cams for shooting sports events !

By the way, if you don't mind, I think tighter crops might give more punch to your pics :
  • pic #2 : removing upper part and the distracting character on the right part of the pic
  • pic #3 : removing worthless left part of the pic
Enjoy your new cam !

I used to take a lot of pictures of high-school basketball, in poorly lit gyms with my k10d. Many of which were used in high school yearbooks, etc. Who was it again that said Pentax can't do sports? I have never ever read or heard those words from anyone except for Pentax fans.

I'm sorry but isn't this another example of Pentax owner insecurity? "Look I took a picture of someone dribbling a basketball. I thought only Nikon could do that." "Look, I took a picture of a flying bird, I thought only people with white lenses could do that."

Go look at the Nikon, or Canon forums. You will never see a thread like this. Why the need to justify yourself in comparison to the big 2?

Thanks for your comments!

I agree with you, only a "little brother syndrome" issue here. (Did I mention I'm not a good photographer before?)

By the way, I only wanted to share the pics to help others, not to show how bad Pentax is. Will you mind showing some of your basket pics?

Regards

The "neon" colors from these photos reminds me of my Sony DSC-S70 which I really hated. I gave that camera away when it was still worth at least $250!

Damn the Pentax Manual

...fast lens works well with most bodies. Fast lens makes the difference. These pic's look great.

These were done with the K10 I believe, also the K7 would be better outdoor wildlife than your Kx would.
Nice photos to illustrate the capabilities of the Kx. The Kx is the camera I select for indoor work of any time due its IQ at high ISOs; I am a believer. While I have the K7 and K20 also, the Kx is my choice for indoor sports and outdoor wildlife due to fast AF and ability to use high ISO.

Excellent, and considering F8. At F4 the DOF at that distance would still be fine and you would have room for two more stops of shutter speed. And using a 2.8 lens would allow even another stop in addition to that for either the light or speed. The K-x is a great camera. Betcha there is a K-7 replacement soon, with similar ISO response.

I also think K-x is great for indoor sports if you have to use a Pentax camera, as it has nice high ISO performance. It is still not as good as some other brands and there will be many more missed shots due to insufficient fast and long zoom lenses or inusufficient AF performance. For slower sports like weightlifting, it should be OK.
