I had the chance to shoot Willie Nelson on January 8th in Fort Worth Texas. The lighting favored by Willie apparently was red, orange and magenta.. so with that delightful color mixture I just decided to shoot the entire concert in BW using the BW Dynamic setting of the GF1 and the 45-200mm, ISO 800 (I was sitting a fair distance from the stage and no tripod to steady the shots.)

Here's a couple of samples:

To see the rest, visit the GF1 section of my website at BoxedLight.com. There is a series of about 21 shots. I apologize for the dupes in advance. Just noticed I have a couple. Will remove those soon.

The ability to 'see' the shot is more important than the gear used to capture it.

Enjoyed these immensely Jim. good call on the B&W.
You and the GF1 seem to be hitting it off.
Keep up the great work!
Don

Gorgeous shots -- all of them. Thanks so much for sharing these. Very encouraging. I just ordered my GF1 yesterday.

I'd also be very interested to know what aperture and shutter speeds you were able to work with in there. But I'm seriously very happy to see this group of shots and information.

Thanks so much!

Steven
P.S. Looks like it was a great show too. :-)

Terrific photography, Jim. I enjoyed the series at boxedlight! Willie Nelson is blessed to still be able to do shows like that at nearly 80 years of age

To me these look fantastic. I didn't think the speed of the 45-200 would even allow for ISO 800 shooting.
Oh, yeah. I normally shoot the 5D with the same settings. Usually the house lighting is good enough to get the shots but when it's orange/red/blue you might as well give up trying to get decent color shots.

Aperture was f/5.6. Shutter speed was anywhere from 1/40 to 1/200. I shot in shutter priority and was constantly turning the shutter speed wheel. I'd shoot, chimp a bit, then do a series until the light changed.

You can NOT go by the histogram under concert lighting conditions. Watch the pros at any concert and they all do the same thing.. shoot, chimp, adjust, shoot chimp, adjust... until they get a feel for the stage lighting. I've been doing it that way for the last seven years or so.
