Or the equivalent of a cable release, whatever that would be.

Thanks.

It's funny you should ask about a remote or cable release. I just needed this capability, but all I had was a WFT-E5 Wireless File Transmitter. I put it into WFT Server mode and was able to control my 7D with my iPhone. It's a round about way of doing it, but it works.

The Canon RS-80N3 works fine; you can find far-less-expensive versions on ebay. The one I bought on ebay about 5 years ago for my 20D works perfectly on my 7D.

RS-80N3 is the simplest and most reliable - it's wired, so there's no batteries needed. I've had mine since the mid-90's with my EOS A2 so it's durable as well.

For wireless operation, there's the Canon RC-1 which will give you the option of immediate shutter release or a 2-second delay. Main disadvantage is it needs line of sight with the IR receiver on front of the body.

A better wireless solution, IMHO, is one of the wireless sets on ebay. I have a Phottix brand wireless. There's a receiver the plugs in to the N3 connector on the body, and the transmitter that duplicates the body shutter release - that is, half a press will activate the meter and AF. It doesn't need line of sight, so the range is much better than the Canon RC-1. I've never had a problem with it. Only disadvantage is that both parts have batteries, and they're not identical. But it's very inexpensive - cost me about $25 shipped.

Hi Mark,
Are you using your wireless release on a 7D?

I also have one of the inexpensive ones from e-bay (the make is Adidt) that worked on my 20D & 40D but will not work with my 7D.

I wonder if it is just the brand I have or is there something about the 7D that wont let the e-bay types work?

Peter.

And I second that. It is one flexible accessory (if a bit to the steep side in cost) for the EOS cameras.

For those who aren't familiar with the device, it is not only a remote release, but also a self-timer, a long-exposure and time-lapse (interval) controller that can shoot either a predetermined or unlimited number of frames.

Very cool and handy.

I'll start looking.

Thanks again.

Can you confirm that it is still working on 20D and 40D cameras? Both the timer & simple release models from Canon are listed in their website as being compatible with 26 different EOS models, up to the 7D, which should mean that the interface is still unchanged (ground, half-press & full-press contacts) and clones should work in the 7D too.

I can't try the Phottix, as the battery in the transmitter is apparently dead (foolishly I have no spare), but I'm certain it will work.

The RPS Studio RF Shutter Release works for me (10D for years and now my 7D - just verified). Marketed by Dot Line available through B&H four years ago.

B&H now carries - RS-RT04/C3 $59.95 looks to be the same but updated to allow use a wired remote or RF remote & uses 2-AAA instead of CR2 3v in the receiver like my old one.

Thanks for the info.

It worked on my 40D without fault but I have since sold the Camera so unable to verify if it still works with 40D.

I will check out the connections as it sounds like my unit has gone faulty. The price is so reasonable to replace i will more than likely just buy an other.

Peter.

What I read says from 1 second to 99 or some other large number. I assume it also allows you to have the shutter go immediately?

Thanks.

1. Cheap like $14 on Amazon.

2. No camera shake when your doing long exposures.

3. Instead of self-timers you can compose yourself and not having to run back to your shot just to be in the shot. :-)
Or the equivalent of a cable release, whatever that would be.

Thanks.
