Error Message fEE...what does it mean?

Just got my 80-400 repaired by Nikon due to a serious fall (the lens, not me) and it cost a tidy sum.

Took it out on this Christmas Eve and it will not shoot with my D700 and has the flashing error message, fEE on the LCD and in the viewfinder.

I realize I need to send it back to Nikon repair and I have already logged in and expressed my dismay and disappointment but...

Anyone venture a guess at what the problem is?? I already took it off and on and placed other Nikkor lenses on the cam that did work.

Does the 80-400 have an aperture ring? Thats the error I get when I mount a lense and it is not set to highest f stop...

Lock the aperture ring at the minimum aperture setting. Lens with aperture ring must be set and locked at the minimum aperture setting.

I knew there was a good reason to be on the forum and how stupid I can be. Thank you for a kind response. Yes the focus ring had not been reset to the highest F stop and not locked.

I see that you have found the error, but, seeing other lenses did work, and the repaired one did not work, you should have checked the settings on the repaired lens to see if there was any difference.
Saves a lot of unnecessary stress.

As far as I understand the error message fEE means that you need to lock the aperture ring which is ON your lens at its smallest aperture, say f22 Otherwise the lens refuses to focus, even is you have it set on manual.

Since you already logged in and expressed your dismay and disappointment, might I suggest going back in and reporting that the lens is ok, that it was an aperture setting problem? It might be a nice thing to do for those who fixed your lens, so they don't go on thinking that they screwed up the repair. Just a thought

It is a lens fault but not necessarily a faulty lens. I just put my 50mm f1.8 lens onto my D700 & got the same. error message. On checking the lens I found the locking switch had (No idea how) become switched from lock to unlock, these things happen I suppose but the aperture setting had got moved from the f22 to f16. f22 has to be locked in place for the lens to function properly. once rectified the lens & camera was back to normal. Nikon have produced these error messages to help owners of this EXCELLENT Equipment. We as owner/users must continue to share our knowledge for the occasional miss-understood error messages, I applaud all of you who do so.

At roughly the 8 o'clock position (looking at the mount facing the camera). There is an arm next to the metal portion of the mount called the EE servo.

Nikon lenses, will have a tab that will engage this servo arm (the tab was originally used to indicate to pre-chipped cameras what the last aperture setting was. Thus the digital cameras are able to senes when the lens isn't in the last aperture setting.

I learned this when I was AI modifying my first lens last week.
