Which lens?

I have a $1200 or so budget for a new lens, and currently I'm kind of torn between the 70-200IS F4 and the 24-105 IS lenses, they're about the same price.

Right now I have an XTi with the stock 17-55 which I rarely use and a 50 1.4 which is pretty much always on the camera. I shoot mostly indoors now (that's why I pretty much always use the 50) but I'd like to do more outdoor shooting, especially now that my son is 2 years old and can run around outdoors now.

I kind of like the zoom range of the 70-200, but I'm wondering how much use I'd actually get out of it because it's so big...but I do like the wider angle of the 24-105....since I do find the 50 a little long sometimes.

Any suggestions??

Difficult decision.
I doubt that you will need the 200mm range.
There might be more answers in the Canon SLR Lens Talk forum though.

You probably have the 18-55 non-IS version if it's the kit lens. The 17-55 is a f/2.8 $1000 lens.

The 24-105 is a general purpose walk around lens and is decent for travel but there is much overlap with your present kit lens yet not as wide.

The 70-200f/4IS is one of Canon's best lenses with the latest IS technology and newest lens coatings and optics making for great color and contrast......it would be ideal for outdoors when your 2 yr old is running around the yard or playground and for future sports/action activities.

Zooming in at the 200mm end would make for some great candid portrait shots as well.......

Ha...that's what happens after a week of vacation...brain stops working. :)

I have both lenses and use the 70-200mm f/4 more often. It works good for wildlife that's not too far away. Plus as stated the optics are excellent.
