Panasonic's lack of camera stock

I'm just waiting for the 7-14 to become in stock on the panasonic site. I used that lens in a shop not to long ago and compared the images from it on my gf1 and the 14-24 on my D700.

For the most part, the 7-14 was just as good. And with EPP I'd be able to get it for $637 new.

$637 for a 7-14 i can fit in a pocket vs $1430 for the Nikon 14-24..

HMMMM......THAT'S A HARD DECISION! :p

i've never seen the colors in person, but if the red is more of a deep cherry red, not pink, i suppose it'd be alright.

While Panasonic may be making a little more money on European customers (I really don't know given their tax rates), the prices they sell for at Japanese camera shops suggest they have no problems selling them cheap on their native turf. You really have to wonder how wise this is on their part.

At no time was this more apparent than with the inept way they held back the GH1 from the US market. By trying to be penny wise they may have well ended up pound foolish: many people here who would have bought the GH1 here in the US for video use instead went with Canon and will probably NOT look back any time in the near future. Just as the GH1 became readily available in the US Canon already had the better spec'd and very available 7D ready to go, and I doubt many Canon buyers are going to look back at Panasonic's offerings in the next few years as they get deeper into the Canon system. Panny will have noone but themselves to blame for their poor market share among videographers in the near-future

Im not sure about that.
Cos made in japan just means quality in most cases.

I have a Jap version GH1 and the GF1, I cannot really complain about it, but i was one of the early adopters of the GF1 where i was hunting for it on the first day of release.

Looking back to the production of Canon 7D and the Nikon D300, both ran out of stock at the beginning, so probably same case that goes to other manufacturers too i guess.

by no means i do not think this is annoying in anyway, since I ordered the 14-140 late in Nov, and looking to arrive some time end of Jan. I hate the waiting game too.

but at the end it's worth it for my requirements.

The D3 I had no trouble since I bought that for my dad quite late after it was released for at least a year, I forgot how how long after release it was.

but I do see friends complaining about 7D being out of stock where I live which is in HK, where mainlanders spend money without thinking when they come visit.

so they just sweep the whole lot, the most amazing scene I saw was a couple from China bought at least 7 cameras some were the same model in their single visit to the shop.

It's facinating...

I have been waiting a month for a G1 in black. Yes Amazon has it now but they want $799. That is just plain price gouging. Anyhow I am starting to reconsider the possible downsides of the G1 and am looking at a D90. Panasonic may lose a sale because they saw fit to play with supply.

So Amazon has them in-stock, and Panasonic.com has them shipping in 7-10 days so there is stock rolling in, but they have them at 799. It's simple supply and demand. There are plenty of blue and red, and more demand for black. They drop the price of the red and blue to entice people to buy the colors and charge the normal price for the black. Do you have an order in with another retailer at a cheaper price?

Yes, I have had it ordered at Adorama for a month now at $640. I understand supply and demand, but $799 is just plain price gouging. I am very disapointed in Amazon for that.

Yeah, the G1 has been out for over a year, so paying full retail price seems wanky to me. Some people act like these camera makers and sellers are their masters and they are at their mercy or something. No one has to buy anything from anyone. Vote with your dollars. If a company is using less than savory sales tactics, then don't buy their stuff and see how long they stay in business or change their tactics.

Who are you going give your business to, the guy that tries to screw you at every turn, or the one that is up front and honest and treats you fairly?

I had the D90, before my D700 and I think it is a very capable camera, at least as good as the D300 for image quality and better for DR. The G1 isn't even in the same league. The G1 is probably more like the low end Olympus cameras, only with better CD AF.

You can order directly from panasonic, the 20 1.7 kit is expected to ship in may, I just received my 20 1.7 kit I had placed on Dec 7 today direct from panasonic. At that time, shipping was estimated to between 7-10 business days. The 14-45 kit still has the estimated 7-10 business days for shipping.
