I have a 50D with 28-135mm kit. At 28mm with 1.6 crop, it is definitely nowhere near wide.

I would like to ask for recommendations on a budget wide angle lens that provide decent IQ with the 50D.

Thanks in advance.

I think the Canon EF-S 10-22mm is quite a good lens. I think it is going well with the one you already have.

I have the Sigma 10-20. The Sigma is a great lens and a little easier on the budget. Despite it being lower cost than the excellent Canon 10-22, the Sigma's IQ is not proportionately lower. In fact, it is very close to the Canon.

The only downside is that different copies of the Sigma can vary in quality. If you decide to buy one, make sure that you test it well before buying. Alternatively, be sure that the store you buy it from has a good returns policy.

Here's a couple of sample images that I took with the Sigma 10-20 a little over a week ago. These photos are of a Garden Park which is located on the top of the 3rd level roof of a mall in Singapore:

I went with the Tokina 12-24 and love it. I decided to forgo the additional 2mm on the wide end (ie 10 - 12 range) in favor of 24mm on the long end (ie can use 24mm as a quasi "normal" perspective focal length when needed....w/o having to change lenses). When I look at my travel pictures, this is the most used lens I have....I love it.

budget?
an 18-55mm kit lens
My thought as well. There is a huge difference between 18mm and 28mm and 18mm may be as wide as the OP wants/needs.

Similarly, the EF-S 15-85 f/3.5-5.6 IS USM is the same price as the EF-S 10-22, gives as wide angle as most users would need, and is a far more useful focal length range than 28-135. IMHO, YMMV.

The OP said they wanted a "budget" lens and I don't consider $720 budget. I have the Tamron 18-200 and it gives me very good images. How good is for the purchaser to decide, but at less then $300, I find it a good value.

Try not, Do, or Do Not. (yoda)

I agree with the 10-22, but that's hardly a budget lens. There are two choices - wide and ultra-wide

EFS 17-85 450
EFS 18-135 450
EFS 18-55 140
Sigma 18-200 320, or 440 with IS
Sigma 18-50 420 for f/2.8, 300 for slower
Tamron 17-50 450

Tokina 12-24 500
Tamron 10-24 470
Sigma 10-20 480

Thank you everyone for your valuable feedback. Some of the suggestions are great, but it is really beyond my budget now.

So I need to do some thinking, whether to get something now or save up and get better lens.

Cheers!

look the tokina 11-16mm...the reviews are impressive!

Hi

You had realised that you can't afford what you want. Then wait until you can bay the lens that is just right for you. You are having a good camera that deserves a lens of a certain quality.

I have to laugh at that nobody other than a handful payed attention to the budget part and heard just wide angle. I agree on the 18-55mm IS.

Quickly shooter, draw your lens or prepared to get shot.

I agree with suggestions for both third party lenses

Tokina 11-16 and Sigma 10-20. I have both the Sigma and Canon 10-22. Call it luck of the "bad/good copy" whatever...I shoot with my Sigma more often than Canon (I like it better;)...And as far as getting a bad copy, Sigma's customer service and warranties are phenomenal. They'll make sure you get an excellent copy...as long as it's within the 3 year warranty period:)

As far a "budget" WA lens...it's tough to buy "new" under $400. However, there is a very active used/pre-owned market (I say pre-owned because I know several folks that have invested in DSLR gear...bodies, lenses, flash, filters, etc....ONLY to leave it at home and take the P&S with them). The third party lenses don't seem to hold their value as well, so you can find them for 25-30% off retail. Look for the right seller, locally on Craigslist. Spend some time looking and I'd bet you'll find that same character I'm talking about...More money than sense and ready to take the loss to recoup some of their lost "DSLR" investment:)

While the 15-xx and 17-xx and 18-xx are actual wide angles...on a crop sensor, they're not going to give you much better than 24-whatever up to 29/30-whatever.

Slipping into the 10-22, 10-20, 11-16, you'll be able to achieve a more ultra wide angle shot with wide angle capability (16-32 on the Sigma)...

Again, tough to find them at a budget price and if you spend budget money on a new lens, you'll find lesser build quality, slower AF, aperture handicap, more CA and distortion at either end (wide or tele), and overall...a lesser quality lens, IMO. After 20 years of shooting, I've come to the realization that a true wide angle lens should be just that...when you try to mix both in a zoom with more than 3x zoom, there are trade offs at one end or the other...or BOTH!

Good Luck and I agreee....save your money til your ready to buy the right lens for you. Check out this site http://www.lensrentals.com/category/wide-angle/for-all for the chance to rent all of these lenses...without insurance, $41 a week, with insurance, $48 a week (give or take a buck or two).
