I'm new to DSLR and I'm thinking about getting the 35mm 1.8 lens. Would this lens not be right for a outdoor ice rink maybe during the night? I couldn't find many night shots with this lens.

The FF version is f2, but the OP is talking about the new DX lens, which is f1.8.

I've been very happy with my 50mm f/1.8 for all of my indoor and low-light sports photography, the only thing is when I bought it I forgot about the 1.5x factor. I should have gotten the 35mm f/1.8, what I was aiming for was a low-light fixed 50mm like I used when I shot film. Other than that it has been great for indoor/low-light use.

Your pictures are very nice with the 35mm. Makes me want it more now that you didn't use a tripod for those night shots.

Guess I should have added, I'm enjoying mine on my D300. Would have posted a pix, but really haven't shoe anything really noteworthy with it yet.

Also talked my brother into one for his D60 and he is liking it as well.

Great little lens (a wee bit soft wide open, but clears up quickly) and priced right to boot.

I shot these raw, and no flash.

I used ISO 800 on the first few shots, and ISO 1600 on most of the rest. Some of these shots have heavy noise reduction - a camera with lower noise ought to do quite well with this lens.
