I took this shot with my "dinky" 40-150.

I'm sure the huge Nikon lenses do very well but I prefer the light weight of my setup.

E-420 1/1250s f/7.1 at 45.0mm iso 400

Here is the dirty secret. All three are under 40. The hunched fatigued look is the strain of carrying those stovepipes and the shoulder stocks. That is why Divine Providence gave us all tripods for that kind of work. Me no lens envy. Me no need Viagra either....LOL.

Looks pretty good, but why not ISO 100 and a much slower shutter speed? :)

Oh, and aren't most of those Nikons f/4(ish)? They definitely don't look big enough for f/2.8.

Good shooting.

After seeing those old guys and setups, there will be no more comments from this corner about the weight of a bag that includes the 50-200 SWD.

I leave my camera on ISO 400 much of the time when I've got my 70-300 mounted shooting birds. Yes, much of the time I'd prefer ISO 200 1/500 rather than ISO 400 1/1000 if I was futzing with settings.

But I'd rather leave the ISO on 400 and worry about getting the shot than keep changing it based on conditions, since the IQ at ISO 400 (on my 510) is good enough to make huge prints anyway.

"ISO 400 and be there", I guess.

No IS with the E-420 and I needed the high shutter speed? ;) Truthfully, I had no idea I used ISO 400 until I posted the photo, but 400 worked well enough, I'd say.

Good point. I do leave the ISO on 400 when using my D200. I may start (intentionally) doing that with the E-420 since it seems to work well.

I would like to post that pic on my Airsoft club forums. They gave me a lot of ribbing over my "huge" 50-200 lens, so it would be interesting to see what they have to say about those genuinely huge lenses. :D

LOL. "That's not a lens, THIS is a lens!"

Sure, feel free to re-post it.

Reminds me of some of the lenses I saw in game parks in africa. I thought my Sigma 135-400 was big, until I saw some of those. YOu know how people joke about attaching cameras to lenses instead of the other way around? At one point I wondered whether they'd attached the car to the lens rather than the other way around.

I was hiking in the steep mountains of East Asia recently and I saw this man lugging a huge FF Canon Camera and lens into setup for a scenic. I kind of felt sorry for him as I sprinted by, took several photos of the canyon with the light just perfect with what turned out razor sharp photos with beautiful colors, and then continued on my way. He was still unpacking and setting up when I left.

Makes me yearn for a 500. Maybe not....

You are right about that. I admire these guys! (But I still don't want anything that big.)

i totally agree that not everyone wants to carry huge gear about, i love carrying a Oly XA about at times because it does actually fit into a pocket, but next time i get invited to a wedding that's the kind of lens line up i'm taking lol

SIGNATURE: This is a picture I did not take of a tall, greying man with crooked teeth whom I've encountered three times while photographing downtown, and each time, he's approached me quickly from the front, with a long stride, and each time he's leaned toward me and said the exact same thing 'OLD ONES ARE BETTER' while palming his ancient brass Leica, opening his hand enough to show me what's there, but not enough really showing-off!' (An Unknown Leica Street Photographer)

These guys are all excellent photographers who seem to be happy with their gear. They didn't pay a lot of attn. to my Oly but we did have a nice chat.

All that weight would probably strain my back. The heaviest lens I use is a (Nikon) 70-300 and that's enough.
