Canadian delay in repair 7D, UNREAL !!

I'd be thrilled if they gave me a new body...also, a new camera :)

Loren
I sent my 7D in to Mississauga, Ontario Oct 28 for the typical focusing issues. They received it and the website was updated to indicate "Work in Progress". I phoned yesterday and mentioned that generally people south of us that have sent it into Irvine or Jersey are getting it fixed quite quickly, (on the whole). so he updated my case to "Rush Shipping".

This morning I phoned and asked them if they can tell how many jobs are in que ahead of myself. He checked my work order and he said a new body is on order because Canon Canada has no software to fix my problem! C'mon, unless my 7D has a problem that no others have, sure give me a new body but using the excuse that software isn't available.

Sorry to vent but has anybody else up here heard of this excuse and what are my chances of getting a good copy this time?

That sounds very strange. It could be that they don't want to tell you that they're buried in gear that has been sent it for repair and they're trying to stall you with a lame excuse, or maybe that they dropped and broke your camera and will have to replace it with a different one. There's obviously something very wrong with your camera if it has to be replaced.

Normally I'd be happy too Loren, but the thing is, can I be promised that the next body will be good? It would be a real good deal if the one I sent in had 150k clicks and had been dropped four times, but it was basically new also.
thanks

There's obviously something very wrong with your camera if it has to be replaced.
Prove it.
Okay, the proof is in what the OP said. There's no way that a Canon service center wouldn't have the firmware to update the camera, if that's all it needs, especially when the latest firmware is freely available on the internet to anyone. The need to replace the camera would only occur if the camera has something very wrong with it.

fotography, I understand what you are saying, and the truth is none of us can "prove" anything. But I think we can make a fair assumption that it isn't a firmware update that is required - people can do it at home so there is no reason Canon Canada can't do it at their service centre. As a result, I don't think this is a firmware issue. Perhaps Canon Canada doesn't have the software to interface with the camera on a level beyond firmware at this time (speculation). If the OP is understanding them correctly and the body does in fact need to be replaced that is a little odd - would you not agree to that? A camera body is a collection of parts, I am fairly confident that most parts are replaceable. There is probably a point where they figure the replacement parts and labour will probably not be cost effective and will replace the unit or perhaps that the replacement parts will take several months to obtain which is also unacceptable and may cause them to replace the body.

Regardless, you are right, we have no proof of anything. No proof there is a problem with the body and no proof that the body actually "needs" replacement. In the end we can only go on what the OP has shared with us. I also doubt that the body actually needs replacement but it may be the most efficient way to get the user back a camera body.

Correct, I agree, this would cost a swack of money to replace with another new body so are they going to do this with every 7D shipped to them with the same issues? Don't they have the smarts the US repair shops have?

This is what I said in another thread, "Canon's curse"

They seem to lose no matter what they do. To me, and I think to most, an offer to replace a faulty camera with a new one is great customer service.
How can you even come close to complaining about that?

If you regret not getting your original body back, why did you send it in in the first place?

Rgds

I don't care what body they send me it's just that I hope that the one I get will be verified to be working properly. I sent the original one in for inconsistent focusing.

Well let us know how the repair turns out.

last Monday. Here is the email I received yesterday.

Dear ZENON :

We have received your equipment for evaluation and repair. Based on our initial examination, we will start the necessary repairs at no charge to you. You can expect the repair to be completed and returned back to you within approximately 7 business days* from the date shown above. There is no need to respond to this notice.

We Canadians have a lot going for us except when it comes to camera service :)

Got a notice from Federal Express. The Cam is supposed to be delivered today. I read my original post and I made a mistake. I shipped it on Tuesday a week ago not Monday. 8 day turn around time. Not too bad. If I had the money I would have shipped all my lenses as well and get them tuned up to the cam. I read about all these people who live within driving distance to Irvine and NJ. You all are very lucky.

Cant wait to hear your results...

If you can do a simple one shot test something like I did in my
7D Owners - Test your Focus thread that would be great.

I'd love to hear Canon can correct this randomness in focus many are seeing with 7D focus its a great camera otherwise.

It's on the Fedex truck. Getting my passport and everything else ready for a little trip across the border.
