OK might sound like a silly question but it there a way to adapt nikon/nikkor lenses for use on a canon camera? Stepping rings etc.? My folks have some older nikon lenses (mainly manual focus) that I'd like to play around with but will be purchasing a canon instead of a nikon.
Thanks in advance for the help!

Cheers,
Phil

Sure you can. I have several pre-AI Nikkor lenses that occasionally I mount on my Canon. You need an adaptor. I picked up one for $15 from a hong kong seller on e-bay. I'm not sure the focus assist chips that sold have all the issues worked out, so i don't think the chips are worth the extra.

You'll be doing stop down metering with manual focus, so don't count on much sports photography.

Enjoy,
Dave

Hi Dave thanks for that.
Is it one size fits all for the conversion ring?
And how would I find out if the specific lenses will work using that ring?
Any idea who the ebay seller was or should I just do a general search?
Cheers,
Phil

I've got an old nikon 55mm f3.5 macro lens which I use with my canon 50D. You need an canon EOS/nikon lens adaptor ring which you can get on ebay. This ring fits all nikon lenses and fits straight into your canon camera. However, you lose all electrical/automatic contacts and focus is strictly manual. Exposure works best on A-priority. Just set you aperture ring and let the camera do the rest. Manual settings are best for macro work but a flash is essential.

I've used on-camera flash in the hot shoe reflected off a cardboard diffuser as well as an MT-24EX macro twin flash unit fitted to the end of my nikon lens. Both work OK as they are both E-TTL. I've got an MP-E65mm canon macro lens but I've always had a soft spot for nikon lenses, especially the macro ones. Those old nikon lenses had some of the best glass ever used.
By the way, those EOS/nikon adaptors are metal and pretty well made.

Offered purely as incidental trivia, the Tim Burton movie Corpse Bride was shot with Nikon glass on Canon 1Ds Mk II's.

I used to do this and it does work will. At first I used a fotodiox pro adapter but then I upgraded to a novaflex. I needed a strong adapter because I was using a Nikon 800/5.6 on my EOS bodies. That's 12 lbs of lens to deal with.

Metering can be tricky but just practice and you'll get a feel for it. While I would not recommend shooting action with this type setup it can be done.

The above shots were all with the 800/5.6 mounted on EOS bodies.

I've since picked up a D300 to devote specifically to this lens. Certain Nikon DSLRs will allow you to set up custom programs to recognize specific manual focus lenses while giving you automatic aperture control, aperture setting in the viewfinder, consistent metering, proper exif info, and focus confirmation in the viewfinder. If you find yourself using these old lenses alot you way want to consider this.

Anyway, good luck with the lenses. Some of them are really good and can give you quite satisfying shots.
