I was out hiking the other day and went to take a picture and My D40 would not work. Upon closer looking I saw that I was getting a SDHC card error saying it was bad. I tried the card in a another camera, still no good. Plugged it into my USB reader and it would not read. I tried cleaning it, warming it, everything...nothing worked. I went on-line and ordered an upgrade replacement, and while I was at it I also ordered me a D90!!! Both should be here this week.

While reading Ken Rockwell's site I saw that he recommends to re format your media card every time you go to use it. I decided to take my bad card out of the trash and I plugged it back into my USB reader. I went into My Computer and tried to open up the card, but no go. So I had my computer re format this disk for me and it now works :-) Thank you Ken for giving me the idea. Now I will have two working 8GB cards.

In the future, reformat your cards in the camera, not on your computer. It will help to ensure reliability.

Also, Nikon makes card formatting so easy that it's difficult to not do. On the D90, simultaneously hold down the delete button and metering mode button until the top LCD flashes "For"; then press both together again, and the card is formatted.

I tried to format in the D40, but the camera would not accept that the card was any good...so I was forced to use the computer. Now that it works again, I will use the Nikon though.

I stopped by the Post Office...no camera yet :-(
