I LOVE this dream-combo (E-P1+20mm) x10 Pics

Good images, but my dream combo with a prime is GF1 w/20mm 1.7

I noticed that Lumix deal better with highlights and I prefer Panasonic Lumix colors to Olympus colors, and the GF1 speed is better
I am sure the GF1 is a great camera. I had a quick play in-store while purchasing the 20mm and knew it would be popular. Made me feel that the m4/3 system was really taking off and offering customers real choices.
Anyway both are very good, it's a matter of taste

(BTW, that image with the car moving, I had took another without the car)

:)
Thanks for looking and your comments. I actually have a few more shots of that scene without the car, but kinda like the car in it – makes it more interesting to me. It is also the first time to experiment shooting a lower shutter-speeds to capture water and mini-waterfalls. Still learning, but the fun of using the E-P1 has helped me a great deal with exploring different kinds of photography techniques.

Tony

I've been poisoned. Please, please, any antidote, if I can't afford just the lens....

Heavenly match.
Here QUICK, please have a sip of either one of these drinks to see if that helps...

...oh, by the way (both taken with the E-P1 + Lumix 20mm f1.7) ;)

You were one of the people to convince me of this combination - totally agree, it's the very best combination available right now for m4/3rds.
I am glad you are enjoying this ‘dream’ combo too. I wonder what has happened to your 17mm?
Enjoy! These are perfect illustrations, beautiful colour and super sharp / great bokeh.

Good eye for composition too!
Thanks for your kind compliments. Seriously, I still have a lot to learn! Fine-tuning my exposure to avoid blowing highlights... quick-choosing the right shutter-speeds/aperture for the right shot... when to use IS and to switch it off... to leave auto WB or to manually adjust it... etc.

But like I said before, it is time to master my tools and learn its idiosyncrasies. I can squeeze 20% more in IQ and make better shots from learning my tools rather than upgrading every 6-months (and starting over again in learning something new).

Tony

Those shots are excellent. The combination is fabulous, and some of the credit must go to the photographer. The portrait is especially lovely, and if that is your wife be sure to keep her happy.
Thanks Michael for your kind words.

I keep her happy by keeping the receipts of my lens purchases as far away from her as possible. :)

Great shots! I'll get around to posting some of mine this week for sure with the same dream combo. Work has just been killing me.

Look forward to seeing your shots with this killer-combo!

As for work, I do find photography with the fun factor of an Oly a very therapeutic hobby to deal with being in the office – going out in the fresh air, being creative, reviewing photos, a lil’ PP, printing, uploading onto the web and sharing with other people on Facebook/Flickr/Dpreview. :)

The shots are beautiful - thanks for sharing!

I wonder if you might have a few words about your choice of using vivid vs natural mode on the EP-1?
As an Oly user for a few years now, in the past, I have tended to use Natural mode as this is a good foundation to do PP. But I have tended to use Curves (classic ‘S’ shape) to make images pop with more contrast.

But since the PEN, I have found that just by switching to Vivid mode takes me one step further to getting images and colour that have that slightly saturated ‘pop’ look that I like. I still have to adjust Curves, but not as much, and the images straight out of jpegs is closer to how I like my final images anyway.

Most of my photos are of family and snapshots, and I find that people who view my photos like vivid colours as opposed to flat/ultra-realistic tones.

Totally agree, photography has been such a great way to keep me creative and happy. I actually had an opportunity to take some studio portraits at work for an inter-office project so that was great! I finally got to shoot in a real studio environment with a wireless flash set up with my E-620. This isn't the right forum for those pics, but I'll let you know when I post them in the Oly SLR forum.

Tony, these are phenomenal! Love the bokeh, especially in the portrait. I'm still waiting for my copy of this lens to go with my G1.

Tony, you mentioned that you use Noiseware with NR turned off on the EP-1. This means Noise Reduct. OFF and Noise Filter OFF - right? Does this make a significant difference compared to using the in-camera noise reduction?

What program do you use for PP? Any other information about your process that you could share?

I am asking because I really like the look of your photos - I am hoping to benefit from your experience :) Again, thanks for the pictures and your time.

Enjoy the 20mm lens on your G1 when it arrives.

Yes: both NR off and NF off.

By my experiments, I have found Noiseware Pro an amazing plug-in for Photoshop CS3 that I use. The results are far superior to in-camera NR. In-camera uses the Truepic V processor, but switching to my Macbook which uses a 2.4Ghz dual-core processor, it still takes 5-10 secs to process, but the results is basically less noise with zero-loss of detail. In fact, results are actually sharper with less noise than the original with the applied sharpen within Noise Pro. Plus, I have complete control over how much noise I will to reduce and how much to sharpen the shot – this is very important, as low-light shots with high-ISO would need more noise reduction while photos in good light would need less. Controlling that on-screen rather than just selecting NR in-camera before shooting gives me greater control.
What program do you use for PP? Any other information about your process that you could share?
I just use Photoshop CS3 and the Noiseware Pro plug-in. Other handy tools is the free Colormancer Whitebalance Plug-in which allows me to correct shots that have incorrect auto white-balance. I like to keep my workflow streamlined and simple to save time, so just shoot jpeg.

In Photoshop CS3, most photos I apply Curves to. In Curves there is a preset called: Linear Contrast. This applies a very soft ‘S’ curve to give photos a little more pop. If photos have highlights blown, I find the Shadow/Highlights menu in Adjustments very handy. This can also enhance background contrast and colours if they are a bit flat.

Thanks. I hope you find my simple advice useful (I still have a lot to learn and improve). This site and the members here have been a great help for me to improve my photography.

Basically, I aim capture 90% of the photo before PP. With PP, I can enhance the image by 10% or so, but the image has to really be there in the first place. So, I think the key is to master the tool you have in your hand before shooting rather than relying too much on PP.

When is it appropriate to switch IS off on the EP-1 - besides when on a tripod? What modes for what circumstances?
This, I am not an expert in and am still exploring. Generally, anything above 1/100 shutter speeds and I switch IS off to get sharper shots. Anything below, and I switch IS on.

One thing that puzzles me is that when I have the 20mm attached, the focal length adjustments in IS for the lens only goes to 21mm and not 20mm. I don’t know why this is and if it reduces the effectiveness of IS?

Maybe another member might know. I will start a thread on it.

Lastly, have you seen the Manfrotto Modo-Pocket tripod (quadpod)? It is perfect for the E-P1 and is a great design that I have found very handy for self-family portraits and night-time landscape shots. Here is a shot of it:
