Hope this is the most appropriate forum for this question. I've got next-to-no experience of flash photography but I've been given an SB900 so I might as well give it a whirl and have some fun. I've been hanging on to see if Thom Hogan's Nikon Flash Guide would be updated but no sign and I know he doesn't set timescales. So my question is, if it's not the Hogan resource, what is my best learning resource for developing my understanding of flash and specifically the SB900?

Thanks

I don't see the value in buying a user guide off Thom Hogan or anyone else.

You can use:

1. The manual which came with the flash
2. http://strobist.blogspot.com/
3. http://www.flickr.com/groups/strobist/

(2) and (3) will teach you techniques, which is a lot more to lean than operating your flash. Operating your flash is adequately covered by the user manual.

Thanks. I've tried the manual and it's a fine as a reference for how to change settings using the different buttons, but very thin on what the impact will be, what combinations of settings might tend to work best in different scenarios etc. It is what it says on the tin 'a manual' where I'm looking for 'a guide'

Of course I could always go out and get a simpler gun to learn the basics, but since I've got the SB900.......

That is just technique, which does not change much regardless of what model of flash you are using. So again, refer to the two Strobist sites.

Unless you are using it off-camera, there are really only two things you need to think about: are you using it direct or bouncing it of a wall/ceiling and are you using it as your primary light source or using it for fill.

The Hot-Shoe Diaries by Joe McNally.

This book comes highly recommended, Mr McNally is a Nikon-affiliated National Geographic photographer, so you can trust his advice!

His blog is very funny and informative too.
