I bought a spare non-Sony battery for my WX1 off ebay, labelled NP-BG1/NP-FG1 3.7V 1060mAh, which seems to work just fine. However the Sony battery shows just the charge remaining graphic indicator on the LCD screen, whilst the non-Sony battery shows the charge remaining graphic indicator, plus the remaining shooting time in minutes . I first thought that my genuine Sony battery was defective, but reading through the two handbooks there was no mention of displaying the remaining time in minutes.

Is my genuine Sony battery OK?

yes. surprised me too. the sony wx1 comes with a 'bg1' battery which is not smart enough to display time remaining. the 'fg1' has those smarts. i found this out by accident too when i was in a hurry to get a spare battery and purchased the 'wrong' one.

pg 15(gb) in the sony manual, btw:
If the NP-FG1 battery pack (sold separately)
is used, the minute display is also shown
after the remaining charge indicator.
basically sony cheaped out on us by not supplying the 'full service' battery. [g]

The battery that comes with the WX1 is a NP-BG1. It will NOT show remaing time like an FG1 will do. The non-sony battery is effectively an FG1 and WILL show the remaining time in minutes. Nothing wrong with your original Sony battery.

Hi

It sounds like you got lucky.

When umming and arring over a I should risk getting a non-branded battery, I eventually plumped for the branded. Managed to get it for £22. I did this because I had heard stories from this and other sites about non-branded ones not being accepted by the camera - ebay is a minefield for this type of thing.

The fact that you have managed to get a working fg that displays the time left is fantastic. Do you mind posting the seller name here?

The seller I used shows the initials PQQ in their product illustrations on ebay.uk, so is easy to find. On ebay I always read through the seller's feedback, especially for the item I am buying, rather than just going for the cheapest. I never buy memory cards off ebay, that really is a mine field.
