Wow "You Save: $900.01 (35%) "!!!

Don't get me wrong, I buy tons of stuff on Amazon and will continue to do so. But $2600 seems like blatant condescending fiction.

Was there a memo I didn't get?

I'm a longtime Amazon customer and I just can't behind that exaggerated price. Could they be projecting a price based on short supply? Let's hope not. Canon's USA site has a list price of $1699. Amazon must correct this "mistake" and show that they are not discounting the camera at all. Savings... 0.00.

At least with the new Macro lens they're not inflating the price to show a fake savings. What's the "deal" Amazon?

Not saying that this explains it, but $2,600 is more or less equal to £1,600 which is the price most retailers here in the UK are asking for the camera... :-/

Ouch!
I can't believe the pricing discrepancy between the US and Europe is so high.

$1699 / $1899 is Canon's minimum advertised price. So it's not REALLY misleading. Although I'm not sure that $2600 is Canon's "list" price

I think it is a default calculation Amazon uses that causes this problem. They take the least price they can sell an item at and make their profit, and then multiply it by some factor to come up with their list price. Then they decide on a price somewhere in that range for the item. In this case where the price is fixed by Canon, they can't sell any lower, so their equation does not work here. Just my theory. ;]

Their price is the same as every other dealer taking pre-orders. I honestly don't get that the big deal is.

It is false advertising. Amazon does it all the time. As of now, the 17-55 is listed for $1,700 "list price", and $1,030 sales price. The 70-200 f/4 IS is listed for $1,800 and sold for $1,100, etc.

Selling price is advertised as $1699. If Amazon bills you for anything other than that, it's false advertising. Otherwise, it's just more of the same whining about nothing that has become common on this forum.

There is a big difference between list price (recommended retail price) and what a store chooses to retail it for. There is "nothing" Canon can do if you sell under the "list price" it is an gentleman agreement that everyone can make a few dollars its the cut off point. Should you mass sell under his price you might find Canon "not being able to fill your order" like other dealers. All that back order crust.

the short is Amazon can put up the sale price as 2699 or 3999 for that matter and discount it by x only trick to this is it needs to be shown on their tax statements as discounted. They would be in a pickle if canon suddenly increased their buy price, they are legally bound buy that sale price till canons price exceeds their chosen retail price(only for the backorder items).

Amazon says: List Price: $2,900.00.

Canonusa.com says: Suggested Retail Price: $1699.00.

According to wikipedia, those two terms are equivalent. I call that false arvertising.

Wikipedia isn't correct on everything. The 2 terms most certainly are NOT interchangeable. Amazon cannot charge you $2,900 if they are advertising the selling price as $1,699. So don't order it from Amazon.

I tend to think of the list price as the "yeah, whatever" price. I don't pay it any more mind than that.
