Have I committed a sin?

My EOS D-SLR and lens were destroyed in an accident and the insurance company gave me "market value" to replace my lovely 30D and Sigma 18-50 f/2.8 and I went out yesterday and bought the 50D and the slightly newer 18-50 f/2.8 macro - did I commit a sin not buying a 7D?

I could not justify paying exactly TWICE for the 7D although I have been salivating over the spec and the video quaity - although I have reservations about the practicalities of using a D-SLR for video work - no swivelling LCD etc.

Will I live to regret it - Let me have your views - me, I am off to shoot two models this morning something I would not have been able to do if I commited to the the 7D

you really need 8 fps, 18MP and video? remember. you take the pictures, the cam is just a tool. you won't take better pictures with a higher MP/more features camera.

Well, your point actually is waiting for a 50D replacement, I think the 7d plays in a different league...

Well, to be honest, I also think about buying it as a 40D replacement, but everytime I think about my needs I cannot really justify it...
just my 2 cts.

Would the 7d gives you twice better photos? I don't think so.

Unless you are taking most of your photos in very specific conditions (like low light, where the 50D is already quite good I think, high frame rate like sports where the speed and AF of the 7D would help), the most important is more the piece of glass you will put in front and your eye behind the camera.

I'm also attracted by better cameras when they are released, but from time to time i'm looking at the photo challenges here on DPreview. Plenty of great photos are taken using full frame cameras and expensives lenses. But there are also plenty of winners taken with old cameras like 20D or even some P&S. Photos will always be more about the photographer than the camera. You just bought a better camera, you are already taking very nice photos (I had a look at your website), so you maybe take even better photos with this cam. And you have some money left from the price diff with the 7D to buy a nice lens.

No big deal to me. Enjoy the camera.

I really think you could find much better ways to sin than buying a 50D. Enjoy it.

To make ist short: i think the photographer is taking the photos and the camera is just a tool. Allthough I don't have the 50D is not necesarily to have the newest body all the time. I have the original Rebel (300D), still using, still enjoying it and resisted the temptation to update.

Not trying to make you feel bad but I would go for the 7D if the extra cost and wait is acceptable to you. Especially when you mentioned you like the video quality of 7D. You know there is none of such to speak of on 50D. That being said 50D is a great camera. You will be able to take great pictures with it in 95% of the situation. There is always newer and better ones down the road you can buy.

Depends on the cost I would also consider upgrade the insurance to "replacement value". I got my 20D stolen years ago. Insurance paid 100% for the new camera and lenses. I bought the same 20D because it was still the latest model I could actually upgrade the camera without any cost to me if there was a newer one.

My jury is still out on the 7d and it's value for me. I'm at the point where I still love my 40D so much that upgrading hasn't really presented me with a huge value just yet. The 7d is certainly impressive, as is the 50D that I still have available to shoot with. However, at the price, the features and values needed to unseat me from what I have have to keep going up not just in parallel to get me to spend the money.

That's the great thing about todays cameras. Just like cars, getting a 1 generation old model is still nearly 95% as good as getting the latest current version only at 1/3 to 1/2 less in costs.

As of today, I'd love to upgrade for some of the features of the 50D and I may do so using the 40D as my back up camera, but maybe I'll wait 6 months and see what the price of the 7D's are going for. My alternative is still a stadard 5D even. I like the full frame DOF, the clarity of ISO's being 1-2 stops better and the price, which is a great value today. At 12mp's it's a slight bump for me but with near optimum resolution for my computing power.

I wish there was worthy assurance offers here in Spain.

I've been searching for a worthy assurance for my equipment, but eventually I dismissed the whole thing, and let it go.

From the way you talk about the 7D, its obvious you want it, which just means your going to get it in the future. You wouldn't be getting it anytime soon anyway, if your not on a list already, so getting the 50D now is probably for the best. Being envious of the 7D owners for a year, after you see the images and video flow in from the production models, will just make you that much more excited on the day you finally get the camera you wanted in the first place.

You seem to be posting a lot in this forum about how great the Nikons are. Don't you have anything better to do with your time?

You are in a bit of a tough spot as I see it. I mean at least for me I can not afford to be without my DSLR. Therefore if you could not rent one or borrow one to use for about a month while you waited for the 7D, you would be unable to do the model shoot that I am guessing is a paid gig.

I for one really want the 7D because it is an excellent upgrade from my current 40D. I primarily shoot wildlife using a long telephoto lens. and the extra resolution is enticing for that. I also like shooting birds and that is where the fast AF will be so nice to have. I can get by with my 40D but I truly do believe my photo opportunities would increase with the 7D. Sadly, I can not currently afford the 7D anyway ! LOL I personally would have already ordered one if I could and I am confident I would be pleased. I do not know if the 7D could or would allow you to do more or do what you presently do any better. If you are basically into landscapes and studio shooting, I am betting that 50D will be a great camera for you. So if I got this right, you bought the camera which meets your needs and cost you a whole lot less. So if you have been wanting to add and other camera gear to your arsenal, you might be in a better position to do so.

Only if the insurance company would have paid for it, plus a lens.

This is a heckuva time to be worrying on behalf of those poor, struggling insurance companies, that are only barely able to pay their executives $10,000,000+ a year (not including bonuses)...

It's been proven that the 50D is a great camera. You're going to love the big sharp LCD, extra resolution, and the way it handles.

Go out and take some pictures!
