After lots of looking, I think I'm ready to jump into a 7i :-) Minolta Australia are giving me a cold shoulder finding out when the 7i is released here, and the local camera stores have no idea.

Can anyone recommend a good place online to buy, as someone from Australia? ie. international warranty (if Minolta Australia listens to that!?), return policy (stuck pixels, defective parts, etc), good price :-)

Thanks - Robert

Hi Robert

Bought mine from http://www.bhphotovideo.com and cannot recomend them highly enough. After the Bull S... that I went through with other places, these guys were easy to deal with and had very reasonable shipping and a good price. You will also get the international warranty. One thing to watch out for is the tax plus charges when your camers lands in the country - my total cost was $998US (inc shipping) and I paid an extra $227AUD when it landed. Still much cheeper than a D7 here with no extras! Delivery was about 10 days. Stay clear of the cheep sites as there not worth it and do not have the proper warranty.

Hope this helps.
Mike.

Mike, thanks for the tip! I rang customs and they said there was no duty on digital still cameras into Australia, but there was the GST to pay. at approx. 1.8* 998 = A$1800, that should only have been an extra $180 (10% GST). Was there any itemisation of the $227? I've heard of scams by some US couriers to over-charge when delivering, but I've never bought anything this pricey this way before.

Robert

PS. for everyone,I just saw the D7 here at A$2500 which is about US$1390. Nice money maker given the price in the US...

Robert,

There was $57AUD charged by Fedex for entering the tax. The dollar was only .536. There is no tax on the shipping, so make sure they do not apply the G.S.T. to the overall cost. Although this seems wrong, the overall cost was a lot less than other companies delivery charges. The International warranty is recognised by Minolta Australia. I guess that the cost of the D7i will be around the $3000AUD, so even with the extra costs it ends up less and you will not have to wait! I have just seen the D7 reduced to $2250AUD, so I guss that the D7i is not that far away. The camera store advertising this price thought it was a bargin?.. They also said that the D7i was quite a long way off... so would I if I had to sell D7's at this price!
Cheers,
Mike.

P.S. Next time I buy something this way I will send the money to my brother in law in the States (different state so no tax) and have him send it to me as a second hand item.

Robert,

Minolta Australia have confirmed that the 7i will be available from 1 July 2002 for a RRP of $2,399, you may be able to purchase it cheaper. Most major stores will not stock it initially and will have to be ordered. Online stores may be quicker.
Gary.

Just a note, I believe the $57 is charged by Australian Customs for inspecting the package, so I think you'll have to pay it even if you import it as second hand to avoid GST. Fedex collect the payment from you to pass on to customs.

Grant.

Hi fellas,

I'm from accross the "ditch" in NZ, and I ordered my D7i this week from a shop in Canada - and they were even cheaper than the prices that have been mentioned in this thread!

I did a lot of searching around the Net for a shop in the USA that would ship internationally and have a good price. I almost bought one from a shop in New York called "Family Photo & Video" at a much higher price (US$999), before I spotted this Canadian shop that had a listing on eBay with a Buy Now price for the D7i of only US$869 - too good to be true! But it WAS true.

The shop is called Carman's Foto Source and their website is at http://www.carmans.com although I'm not sure if their website lists the D7i yet - but they certainly do have them in stock, as shown on their eBay listings at http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=1360375669 for example. They are a brick-and-mortar outfit (as oppsed to an internet-only website), with multiple stores across Ontario, and they've been around since 1972. They happily ship internationally, and the D7i I bought comes with a Minolta Canada warranty which will be honoured by Minolta in ANY country (eg. if the camera goes bust here in NZ, I'll just take it into my local Minolta dealer here and it will be covered by the warranty still).

When I saw the eBay auction I rang them (their phone number is listed on the auction page) and spoke to a guy named Rob, who was very friendly and helpful - in fact it was a Sunday morning there, and he had his shop phone number diverted to his home and he spent about 20 minutes on the phone with me from his home! (How's that for service?!) Most shops would be closed on a Sunday. He was polite, patient and answered all my questions in detail. When I rang a couple of shops in New York last week, the guys I spoke to were usually a bit blunt and made you feel like they were in a hurry to get off the phone, like they had better things to do than talk to you (and that's during regular weekday hours). So I was very impressed that Rob was willing to take calls even on a weekend.

As I said before, the camera itself only cost me US$869, and he shipped it out via UPS (with insurance and a tracking number). The shipping cost only US$65 - VERY cheap! What's more, it will only take 3-4 days to get from Canada to NZ - it's due in tomorrow!

I also bought a Mack 5 year extended warranty from him (they work in other countries too) - only US$90 for that, in comparison to the $199 I was quoted by Family Photo & Video. Unbelieveable!

Here's what I'm paying all up, compared with the prices quoted me by Family Photo & Video (which are similar to many other shops in the USA) - the first price is Carman's, the second is Family P&V:

DiMAGE 7i: $869 $999
Mack 5 year warranty: $90 $200
Lens pen/cleaning kit: $12 $15
Shipping via UPS: $65 $99
TOTAL: US$1037 ( NZ$2116) US$1313 ( NZ$2679)

So that's a saving of about NZ$560 - that's a lot of dosh!

Also he was able to help me in getting it shipped out asap, as I told him I was in a bit of a hurry to receive it (I'm going away for the weekend and wanted to have the camera to take with me). I rang him on his Sunday and he had it shipped out on his Monday. He had no problem accepting an international Visa card either (some other shops won't do that). He even rang me after I'd emailed him my details, to tell me that he'd received them and everything was on track.

Of course I can't tell you anything about the camera yet, coz I don't get it until tomorrow or Friday, but I'm very confident that I'll have no problem with it. When it comes to making such a big purchase online (from a shop I can't physically visit to check out), I'm very careful to make sure that the place I'm buying from is safe, reliable, trustworthy etc - not some guy trying to pawn cheap, dodgy cameras from some dubious-looking website or something! That's why I rang them first and checked out their website first, rather than just buying the camera from their eBay auction. All in all I'm a very happy customer so far!

I'm certainly not affiliated with them in any way, but I do think that any business that offers excellent customer service and great prices should be rewarded - we're often very quick to complain about poor service and not always quick enough to praise the companies that give us a great deal! :)

Well that's a bit more than 2 cents worth, but I hope it's helpful to someone. I would certainly recommend this shop to anyone down in NZ or Aussie (or anywhere else for that matter) who is looking to buy a camera for a good price. It's definitely much cheaper to buy this soft of thing from other countries than from our own countries, due to the large mark-up that our local stores have to put on the items when they import them here. Which is what makes the "global community" so wonderful! :) (I've already bought Maha PowerEx 1800 batteries online, and will do the same with a new CompactFlash card - it's much cheaper to import them than buy them locally).

Cheers,
Jeremy

Thanks Jeremy - can you keep us informed as to whether it all turns up and the condition it's in? I'm happy to "reward" good shops with my business. I've had a quote from a good place (very good reseller ratings) of $899 for camera and $70 in shipping.

Can you explain what a 'mack' warranty is? If I can get an extended warranty on the camera that would be great!

Thanks
Robert

Yeah sure thing! I actually found out today that the package has been delayed in transit with UPS (not the camera shop's fault though) so I won't be receiving it on Friday after all. Probably Saturday or maybe Monday. Bit of a shame, but these things happen! I'll make sure I post back here once it arrives. I'll also give you some info on what a Mack warranty is, although in brief terms it's an extended 5-year 3rd-party warranty that works all around the world (pretty neat huh?!). I'll give you more info on that next posting, as I'm out of time now! :)

Sorry for taking so long to post a reply! I'm happy to report that my D7i arrived safe and sound via UPS last Tuesday (25 June). That's 7 days after it was sent (it would normally take about 3-4 days for a parcel to get to NZ from Canada via UPS) - but there was a delay with UPS which resulted in it taking a few extra days (not the camera shop's fault though!). Still, 7 days is still very quick!

The camera retail box was carefully wrapped in thick bubble wrap and placed in a larger cardboard box for shipping. Minolta package the camera itself inside "egg carton"-like cardboard supports inside the retail box so that it can't jiggle around inside that box either. So it arrived in perfect condition! Not even a dent on the retail box! :)

As for the camera itself - it's everything I hoped it would be! IMHO dpreview.com is correct to give the D7i a "Highly Recommended" rating - this camera is great! It has so many buttons and options and settings, it's gonna take me a while just to figure them out (especially as this is my first digicam) - but learning about all this sort of thing is half the fun and half the attraction of such an advanced camera.

The camera comes with a decent sized instruction manual that seems to be very detailed and quite helpful (not too technical either). In the box was also the software CD; another booklet for instructions on how to use the software; plus French versions of the above two booklets (it's from Minolta Canada after all); plus the 4 x 1850mAh Sanyo NiMH batteries; a Sanyo quick charge NiMH/NiCad battery charger (very neat - the metal prongs are tucked into the charger itself and just fold out to plug into the wall, so you don't need a cord - great for storing in your camera bag - the down side is that the metal prongs are the "USA" shape and won't fit in an NZ or Aussie or European wall socket without a plug converter - however it has a 100v-240v AC input which is good for international use - I'd suggest buying a Maha quick charger anyway, with the correct AC adapter for your country (I did that myself), as they seem to be the best quality according to the reviews). There is also a small instruction leaflet on how to use the Sanyo quick charger too.

Lastly there is a "Minolta International Warranty Certificate" which proves that this camera does come with an international warranty (at least from this particular shop - I think you need to beware of "grey market" imports as they apparently don't come with an international warranty). The warranty card says that the camera is warranted by Minolta for one year. On the other side of the card is a list of the names and addresses of the "Minolta Digital Camera International Service Network" - ie. the authorised shops that you can take your camera in for servicing around the world. There's one shop in NZ and one in Aussie (Haco Pty Ltd in Kingsgrove, NSW). I'm sure there would be other shops in our countries that could service these cameras, but I guess they wouldn't be endorsed by Minolta.

One thing that is a bit strange is that the warranty card says that you can only obtain warranty service (I guess that means free service) for shops that are marked with a black dot on the card! And the NZ shop and Aussie shop do NOT have a black dot beside them on the card! Which implies that if your camera has a fault which should be covered by warranty, you won't be able to get warranty service for it in NZ or Aussie. The nearest country to us with a black dot is Singapore or Hong Kong. That's a real shame!

I guess that's where hopefully the Mack extended warranty would step in. I'm pretty sure that the Mack warranty would have authorised shops in NZ and Aussie that would be covered by their warranty. However I can't verify this just yet as I'm still waiting for the Mack warranty certificate to arrive (the camera shop in Canada had to back order it - no big deal to me though, I don't mind waiting a few extra days for that).

All in all, I'm very happy with this product - it's a very flash camera!
