Does anyone know what to expect of the d3 replacement later this year? Im guessing its just going to get the same makeover that the d300 got with video etc

More info would be handy, This isnt a troll post I know its coming just unsure of spec etc and not sure if I should buy my D3 yet...

If you choose to believe the supposed, leaked Nikon roadmap from July, then there's info in there on a D4:

Well, the D3000/D300s/70-200 VRII did come true, I myself think there will be some sort of D700x in a month or two. But considering this info didn't come from jeff-c, the world's most reputable source of pre-Nikon info, I can't necessarily believe it.

D300s was not a full blown replacement but minor upgrade over D300. Nikon has been known to launch such minor upgrades before a major replacement. But they don't necessarily do it consistently. In other words, D300s launch is not a guarantee for an impending D3s launch.

It is not a good idea to base a purchase decision on vaporware. Instead, analyze your needs and match it up with what is there in the market today.

the d300s, 3000, 70-200 were all widely anticipated at the time, however i believe there are other lenses on there that have already not arrived as claimed. In addition based on logic and nikons history to me the 'roadmap' was massively overoptimistic and false.

I also ask what D3 replacement? after 2 years Cannon still has nothing to match it so Nikon are under no pressure to replace this yet. Perhaps an S update with the buffer update, video, and a price increase aka d300s.

their historic schedule is 4 years for pro bodies, making it autumn 2011. I would not be surprised if this is reduced by 6 months to a year though

Agreed. The video "upgrade" was minor. Wait for MPEG4 video encoding. Motion JPEG in AVI is just silly, and Nikon's auto implementation in the D90 is even sillier. I'm cheering for Nikon to add video, but after thinking it can't hurt for my wife's D90, I can't even stand to use the video feature.

I am also keen for video as I have stated before. But until nikon come out with a smooth video and abilities to match or even better the handycams, I will sit on my wallet. I was all fired up to jump in and buy the D300s but now I will buy a sony handycam with full HD 1920 x 1080 res, 12 x's optical that Sony claim 35mm Equivalent : 43 - 516mm (16:9).

I am starting to think that all the people here who said if you want a video camera then buy one, not a DLSR hybrid were spot on.

The fact remains that the quality and capabilities of the different lenses we have definately trump the offerings of the handycam. Never say never is a good way to view advancements in technology. Come on Nikon, tempt me.....

Great advise!

Buy what is available now!! If you wait, you will wait forever and never buy anything!!

As for Video??

I'm not a Videographer, I shoot stills. If and when I need to shoot Video, I'll either buy or rent a Video camera and hire someone with Video Knowledge shoot the Video. I can produce Video, but I can't shoot it!! Why give my clients sub standard work, when I can give them great Stills!! I know enough Video Guys that can shoot great video!! For Home Videos, I have a great $200 Canon Video Camera that works great!!
